A'mara Books Update - February 17

viking-venturesPosted for Everyone to comment on, 5 years ago8 min read

This week at A’mara Books:

This week was a bit crazy. Two birthdays (mine and my youngest’s) threw a bit of a monkey wrench into my week. I did try to take those two days off, but I needed to write anyway. So, I confined it to a work that’s not currently scheduled (probably takes place in the 870s TCE.)

Meanwhile, Chapter 33 of Spice of Strength received Curie upvote #15!
Several of the Curie community gave me some amazing comments as well!

  • One person said that the chapter is worth every second of reading time and that after reading the first sentence he/she feels the hunger to read everything (and reads it 3-4 times before being satisfied.)
  • Another said that he enjoyed the interactions between my characters, the details of my scenes and how I feature the daily rituals of life. He added that it makes me a successful fantasy author.

These comments made my day every bit as much as the upvote itself! (This is why I tell people new to Steem/Whaleshares/WeKu to engage! Even if you have no vote to give at the moment, comments really do make a huge difference!)

Anyway, this week, I wrote…

over 13,000 new words!

  • Neví 4 got about 9000 of that (so my weekly target right there.) However, I ended up splitting that book again! Still too much going on and no way to tie things together. So, at the end of the week, it has almost 9k words after the split. This one is now featuring the countries of Kri’enden and Yezi’im (you will get your first taste of Yezi’im very soon – within the next two weeks.)
  • Tatia’s story is the other which takes place at a future time when being A’mara becomes dangerous, but you can’t completely hide away the gifts… Anyway, her story received over 4000 words and now has over 7000 words.

EPUB readers

In preparation for publishing on Lulu, I downloaded several epub readers so I could look at my files properly.
I downloaded four of these things before I found one that did what I wanted.

  • Icecream Ebook Reader was difficult to use with pages and is horrible nagware (i.e. it asked me to upgrade/purchase every two or three minutes of use!) The only good things were: its library is very nice and it also estimates the number of pages in the book.
  • Epub File Reader is very simple without any bells and whistles. No estimates of number of pages and no library. This one was my second choice.
  • FBReader is very, very simple (too simple) and very old (almost 10 years old) and is no longer being upgraded or supported (the web page suggested that the new reader would be with us in 2015…) For all intents and purposes, it’s a dead duck.
  • Sumatra PDF reader (the one I’ve decided to keep) which has tabs to handle multiple books at once (useful for my wraparounds), page numbers. It doesn’t pretend to be a book the way Icecream does. It could use a few more bells and whistles, but for a free reader, it’s pretty darned good.

Do you have a (free) reader that you like better?

Epublishing and Republishing

The whole epub reader thing happened because when I viewed one of my book PDFs, I realized I had some alignment issues on some of my Title pages. This issue became more obvious when I viewed it as an epub. Fortunately, I figured out the solution and reuploaded everything until it was right.

Additionally, I managed to upload the series I’ve been serializing the past two months. If you want to get ahead, you know how. ;-)
