Motivation is not inspiration. Motivation need not be positive. Inspiration must be.

What needs to be question is the idea that necessity is the mother of invention’.

Does not invention need to be inspired. Trial and error certainly has a place. The invention of the light bulb teaches this. And motivation will aid perseverance through the many failure that precede that one success.

But more than motivation, it is the idea that is important. Failing recognize ideas as a top level determinant of an outcome would leave aviation unfounded. It was the Wright Brothers who realized that a cambered wing design was needed for flight. All the motivation and trials of the rest of inventors pursuing first flight did not succeed.

No. Only the inspiration of the Wrights would lead to the first heavier than air flight.

And for not the idea flight, the world would not be the same.

The Wrights were certainly not the first to dream of flight. Nevertheless, they illustrate the importance of inspiration over motivation. Inspiration produces new ideas. This is not necessarily true. The cambered wing design was a small but very important idea. It shape of a wing was not the motivation for the many attempts at flight. No that was fortune, fame, and passion to reach the sky.

As important as an idea is, inspiration is more. People can be inspired to dream. Not just have an idea for a new invention, but to dare dream.

Visions can inspire. And this inspiration from a mere night’s dream can further bless with a living vision of a new world. This is what led to the American Dream. It was not a product of mere motivation. The new world brought together far reaching ideas for a more humane and prosperous world. It is not perfect, but along its path there was inspiration that challenges any seen throughout history.

God inspires. Man motivates.

Time to ride the wire, fly b-eye why're…
