She put on her glasses and looked into the sun again. Bright. Even now. Too uncommon for a sunrise. But then again, what was not unusual in the desert? When your mind didn't play tricks there were the sand-snakes. The places where the ground swallowed you whole. Trickery of sight and mind. An oasis for the thirsty, that never could be reached. Even the camels did not like this part of the globe. So she was on her bike. Alone. With limited supply of everything.

To cross over, from the old world to the new, this was the one challenge to overcome. But she knew the sand and its path. Even if footprints were destroyed the second they were made. She, the messenger, prevailed. With ties to both sides. The savage land and the golden city. She ate like tomorrow would bring famine but danced like her blood was royal. Both sides accepted her. They at least tolerated her existence.

And for her, the desert was home. Treacherous and mean. But wasn't life the same? Wasn't she like it? She had been born there, right between both worlds. In a cave that had since melted away. How could one decide if she belonged to none? Her mother from the savage land and her father from the shimmering golden city... She had grown observing. To conduct business between both would be lucrative. The wild ones had meats of all kinds. They were hunters. The city had weapons and jewels. Robes of kings. Shiny stuff.

Enough merchants had lost their lives commuting from the one side to other. It was considered dangerous business. It was also very well paid for as only the crazy and the cunning, desperate even, were willing to take part in it.

As a child, she had learned to distinguish where the sand was treacherous and which oasis were real. She had learned to preserve water and survive on the bare minimum. She was the one who was called when serious things needed to be done. Messages, groups of travelers. Expensive goods. That was her. She charged upfront for her services but it was tolerated. Her reputation proceeded her and that was all she needed.

No one traveled alone here but her. And even that did not happen often. However, this time it was a matter of a sensitive nature. It had to be done this way. She took her long cloth scarf from the seat of her bike and wrapped it around her head. She checked everything on her ride and knocked on the tank. She had enough gas in it to last the night. When the solar batteries could not power her ride. She was not planning on stopping many times. Even when it would get cold. Or pitch dark.

She looked back at the savage lands, the brown grass and acacia trees that protected the locals from the scorching sun that was going to rise fully in the next couple of hours. If she left now, she would reach the site, in which to hide from the midday sun, just in time. She threw her leg around her metal beast and powered it on. It roared like a dragon and woke the couple of locals that were still slumbering. Her water was under her robes. Her rations minimal, to avoid the thirst from growing.

She liked to be efficient. She only ever added an extra hour to her schedule. And that was on rare occasions when she did not trust that her ride could make it. As she rode, the sun was constantly at her back. Trying to catch and burn her. The air was still refreshingly cold. But not for long. Every hour, she took a swig from her bottle. Just not to let her throat dry, her lips crack. Especially with the invisible grains of sand floating around.

The route she was taking now was a little longer than the fastest road to the other side. But it was also completely accommodating to her bike. She had no intention of getting off of it to push. If she had taken the camel, it would not be a problem. But, in the end, her bike was faster, even if she took the longest path.

She reached the abandoned site right at the point when the sun was starting to burn at her back. From what she had learned in the limited history books they had access to, it had been some kind of a worship place once. A space that had once collected energy. ''Pyramids'', they called them. They were supposedly meant to be higher as well but the sand had buried the better part of the buildings. Only the tips were visible. Gold glistening on one. The cat-woman or man was not under sand, though. That was where travelers could find their shelter. She pushed her bike close to it an looked around. Hoping to find ancient relics.

If you were lucky, the sand would uncover a transparent material of interesting sorts. It resembled a bottle but was something that you could push and twist. They even had corks on them sometimes. Or other times, it would be something like paper. Again, from this material that seemed to disobey the wheel of time. There would be writings on these papers. The best she had been able to distinguish had been with moons, rings, and a stick. Something in shape of ''Cocola''. She did not know what it meant but it was fascinating to her.

They did not have this marvelous material. On neither side of the desert. But here it seemed, between the pyramids, that this now abandoned place had been a great metropolitan one day, in the past very forgotten. Their ancestors must have been so odd.

Today there was nothing to see but sand here. She parked her bike as close to her as she could and covered it. Then she pushed her self-made wooden door away from an opening. She cautiously descended the narrow stairs under the cat person simultaneously chewing on her rations. Her dried-up straps of meat. She was thinking. Sitting in the darkness and considering the life in the past. How had it been before she had come to exist?

@Nutfund and I have teamed up to reward the new voices on the platform that have less than 5000 WHALESTAKE still. As you may have read before in one of my previous posts, I was looking to give out 100 WHALESTAKE to 50 talented and passionate Whalers when I reached 20000 WHALESTAKE. But it seems there are like-minded individuals here so I have already been able to reward new talent. And there have also been more than 50 people awarded this way already! Here are the latest bloggers rewarded:

@ruth-girl

Another amazing steemian that has joined the Whaleshares platform. Follow her for your daily educational science post and exploration of the world of nature. There is formatting, relevance, information, and everything you want to find if you are looking to get educated about the world around you!

@lana95

Dual language posting once again! The most recent photos made by the author make me wish I could put on my skiing gear and go for those snowy adventures in the world. My only encouragement is to write a bit more, I want to see into your soul!

@jessica-arias

I fell in love with the enchanting digital art this artist is creating. Who does not want to see the cutest of pizza? It is life! Also, there are puppies and kittens on the blog and I am a huge sucker for those. There is even more offered so go check out Jessie's work!

@lyubovbar

Presented by @Nikflossus on the Whaleshares curation show. Photography of all sorts of things. It looks yummy, refreshing, and so free that I want to dance in one of the settings that the photographer has captured. They also look so much like my safe haven so I got homesick browsing through the works!

@milaoz

A beautiful woman making wonderful photography. I appreciate it all, the self-portraits, the food, nature. Oh, the food! I am almost certain that Kott has competition! To be serious, though, we all have a place on the platform and that is why I feel amazing here and looking at this blog.

@adrian11

Presented by @Breezin on the Whaleshares curation show. This author posts in Spanish as well as English. I am quite surprised as this seems to be my first content creator curated through this initiative that does poems. Head over and have a read, maybe he is your next follow!

@grace

Presented by @Breezin on the Whaleshares curation show. Another specialized blog that teaches you how to do loads and loads of origami. Images, video tutorials, and useful knick-knacks that you can create just from paper! How amazing does that sound?

@beherenow

I am trying to mask my crush on this man so I will try to sound very neutral. Heck it, his work is amazing! There has been a lot of talk about copyright on the platform as we are new and are just trying to establish the rules. The bigger chunk of content creators are not entirely sure of copyright law and that is where I send you to check out this blog. But that is not why you might choose to stay. The breathtaking photography and polished aesthetics will do that for you.

And here I go, making my summary of this blog unusually long... Smooth.

@raghao

Some great portrait drawings and art in general. I was lucky to find this person in a curation show run by @poeticsnake and @thebugiq. He is creating great content and bringing you along, through the journey. If you are into art, this is a place to be at!

@trucklifefamily

This is still a fresh blog but it captured me immediately. From what I read, we can expect to hear about the adventures of a mom that lives in a truck house with her three daughters. I love a good adventure and I will most definitely be stopping by to enjoy the content created by this blogger!

@nitrogen

I have been leaning quite heavily on photography this time but I just could not ignore the bright and saturated photos of nature that this photographer takes. Observe nature in all of her colors and find an escape in the work of another.

How does it work? To give out a decent boost in value after post-payout, I am using 30% to 40% @Nutfund vote and 100% my, @lindahas, vote. I will be upsharing each individual once and once only in this way as my goal is to give a head start to newcomers that do the work. That being said, I might drop by your posts with my own vote more often!

Very important. Do not self-nominate or ask for me to check out your blog. I will ignore those comments. What you can do is nominate someone else on the platform. Someone who is great at what they do and actually does the work. I will check them out. No promises. But I will check them out.
