Self upvoting

last month

I recently got tagged in this post for up-voting my own posts.

https://whaleshares.io/comedyopenmic/@comedyopenmic/whale-whale-whale-lots-of-stats-and-numbers#@ultraviolet/re-ultraviolet-re-comedyopenmic-whale-whale-whale-lots-of-stats-and-numbers-20181109t142044247z

I wanted to talk about this more as I don't personally see what the problem is with self up-voting and I see so many people blanket attacking it that I wanted to share my own opinions and my reasons for doing it. Each time I create a new post there is an option to tick a box and reward myself for my creation. Whilst yes I do upvote my own posts, I also spend a lot of time (when I have time) up-voting other people's content I enjoy, up-voting people's comments who take the time to leave them and being a part of the community as much as time will allow (which, is variable depending on what else I am working on). I don't ONLY upvote myself I have a balanced approach. I see self up voting as a kind of dividend for keeping your money in the site or even investing your own money into the site. Whilst whaleshares is new I actually feel it is more damaging for the site for people to constantly power down than it is to keep the money in and self upvote in a responsible manner.

I think I can speak for most people on the site when I say we are here to make money. We might also like the idea of helping others and being part of a decentralised system but 90 percent of people on this site also want to make a few extra bucks for their time too. If we don't self upvote and ONLY rely on others voting us then there becomes little to no incentive to keeping your money in the site and investing it as opposed to powering down. I believe keeping money in right now in whaleshares infancy is VERY helpful for the future of the platform to do so as much as possible. However, I also acknowledge we all have different needs and hopes for the platform and some one might desperately need the money to change their entire life, or put food on the table.

Almost everything I post is original I made it and it took me a lot of time. It's easy to get some images off the internet and share them or some information and slightly reword it. For me that doesn't really add to the site and more and more I am struggling to find original content I want to upvote but I still don't go around making posts about it and judging those people for doing it because I believe in people being allowed to do what they want and if people appreciate it then so be it. It is not my right really to judge what I deem to be valuable to others. I think however, if we all focused on the people calling people out for various things we could find things to pick apart in their profiles too.

There are many ways to abuse a system, those powering down in it's first few months is damaging, those posting stuff thats basically 90 percent copied off the internet and reworded is also damaging as it puts you off wanting to bother using the site, those up-voting those with high voting power just in the hope they will vote them back stops the reward pool being spread and new people getting a chance. Are you really sure you LOVE that post or did you just hope the person would vote you back. I actually believe self up-voting and meeting your own needs first can then help you up-vote others from a purely unconditional place without wanting a thing back from them and focus on producing quality posts.

I want to believe in decentralised social media sites. When it comes to decentralisation, conditions can be set by the creator of (in this instance) whale shares in order to create a new block. Said owner has chosen to allow rewarding oneself as an acceptable means to generate a new post onto the blockchain. Should we really be making our own rules on how we think other people should behave? If we were to really look into many of these people creating said 'rule's' they might be doing things we disagree with. The problem we have with these sites is that it's not so much about how many people agree with the new rules but how much money they have and voting influence/weight. Meaning a few rich people can almost set rules that everyone else has to adhere.... in fear of being 'flagged'. It kind of screams of capitalism and I hark back to an earlier post where I said 'cryptocurrency is only as decentralised as the people who use it.'

I loved whaleshares when I first found it, I have been busy lately and less able to engage but now have some spare days again I have been re engaging with the community. I personally believe we are all here to make some extra money and help others in the process for me that includes posting good quality (in my eyes) posts, self upvoting them (to encourage me to keep as much money as possible invested in whaleshares) and then sharing my rewards with the community on posts I enjoy. If people don't like the way I use the site thats up to them I guess but as they say

'let him who is without sin cast the first stone'

I am genuinely interested to hear other people's views though on this topic and why they so vehemently hate self upvoting and why they think the site was created with the option to do so, not only by voting but just by ticking the box when sharing. I also want to know what encourages people to put their own money in to the site and to invest if they cannot take a dividend?

My actual ideal would be if no one had a voting weight and it was purely about a lot of people liking what you post rather than how much money or power they have having such an influence but I do understand why the system is the way it is because it encourages people to invest and keep their money in the site which, actually self upvoting also does.

I wanted to add a reply I typed to someone on another thread as I do think i explained myself well excuse me for the copy and paste.

If you believe that people investing money into the platform and keeping money in the platform is what makes the site do well then people taking an occasional dividend from their investment I think will encourage people to invest and keep money in and not constantly keep powering down. There is a personal responsibility to add to the community by not over doing it and by not posting loads of rubbish etc and also by only upvoting good quality content and making comments of value. Many things help and don’t help. I wouldn’t even consider putting in my own money in if people are going to be flagging me for things they have some opinion about that to me is the most off putting feature of the whole site personally. There is this guy on steemit called Bernie sanders and all he does is moan about other people and flag them whilst posting zero quality content he to me is a really bad thing for a site as he makes It’s too risky to invest. The word is investing people want to make money on their investment but if they are wise they will also want to add to the community and not take the piss. Yes I have upvoted myself with 3 dollars and also given a hell of a lot of money to other people and curated a a lot I don’t think those figures are accurate tbh above. You only need to look down my shares to see what I add with the money I have generated which so far is not very much. Whilst people go around judging people
For their actions when they are actually giving as much as they are taking to the site then I don’t believe they are making it a safe place for investors.

great post @ultraviolet, and pretty much right on the money, literally.

If people start dictating to each other how their investments should be "managed", investors will inevitably "jump ship", deciding it's less hassle parking their capital into other crypto assets that pay dividends directly back without all the headaches.

And if I put in the time and effort to create my own original quality content, why shouldn't I reward myself as well, growing my own STAKE in the process?!

JUST as I reward many others with my STAKE as well... because I feel they wrote a terrific post, or did something great for the community, or maybe cuz they gave me a good laugh when I really needed one the most.

And as @father2b mentioned, having a strong STAKE yourself only increases the reward you can share with others, which is win-win for you, and win-win for the community, especially if you're properly incentivized to accumulate and not power down.

All that said, it's definitely annoying to see people finding ways to abuse the system, though ironically, they're most likely hurting themselves most.

While they're "busy" pulling out nickels and dimes on self-rewarding short meaningless comments, or constantly spewing out other low-quality content (subjectively speaking, of course), it certainly won't attract any real community acknowledgement.

And at the end of the day, what's better than gettin' a whole lotta "love and attention" back from the community for a "job well done"...?! 😁

Thanks for this well written and thought provoking post @ultraviolet! Also to @alexpmorris for linking me up. Definitely has helped me create some space around my initial feelings about the almighty self-vote, and actually more so about my own sense of self worth and willingness to be rewarded. Like the old saying goes, self love is the first love! Blessin' 💗

💖

I believe if you have a strong upvote/share yourself then self upvoting will only increase the reward for the others that share too. I personally have not self upvoted as my vote is a small 5 WLS but if my vote was something of substance then why not share with the sharers.

·

That’s true ! It definitely helps you build to them share that with others. I can actually see it from both sides but the site must think it helps since it doesn’t only give the option it puts it right by the post button it’s only some people wanting to become the leaders that try and scare people into doing things their way rather than opening up a real discussion on how it does actually affect the platform. I’m not fully convinced it’s bad for it rather than good. Of course people can just upvote themselves not bother voting anyone else and then constantly power down but I guess there will always be people who will find a way to abuse any system if they are desperate to.

·
·

I suppose they will alway's be a difference of opinion on the matter. but what difference is there from using tokens to increase your own posts and actually hitting your own share button and yes you are 100% correct. If the platform did not want you to self vote then why would they build the option.

·
·
·

I agree and I’m fine with differences and discussions what I don’t like is some people deciding their own rules even though they are doing many things that don’t help the platform themselves and trying to enforce their opinion onto everyone else because they have some more money and can threaten and intimidate people to follow their made up rules. It ruins the whole idea of decentralisation in my eyes.

There's nothing wrong with self upvoting. I guess a lot of people don't understand economics and capitalism. I'd much rather be self sufficient than rely on other people

I see nothing wrong with voting for your own post - it is like voting for yourself when running for a leader position and if you think your post is good enough for an upvote, why not?? I do however see a problem with people going around leaving irritating replies like good, well done, yo bro etc and then voting for themselves but if they are happy doing it, it is their problem - live and let live

·

I feel it’s qboht being responsible with your own page I wouldn’t do ten posts a day and upvote them 100 dollars as that’s obviously cluttering up the site it’s all just balance really.

·

Hahah I completely agree that ruined steemit for me or was one of the things that did. None of the comments made sense and were obviously bots like on a digital painting I would get nice photograph and stuff a lot worse

I agree with your posts and the comments. I heard that you were allowed to vote yourself here and then also I read others don´t see it correct, but I also agree that is your decision and you can do it to get more power to also reward others with more money. I want equality. I do vote my posts for that; for growing and upvoting others with 100% of my voting power and of course I am here for the money. I read on discord someone was was upset cause a person was upvoting her own comments and posts in other platform; I don´t see it wrong...is your content and it helps so the money can move within this "cycle "so you can accumulate more and help others and yourself to have an income. I don´t know why people see it as "scam" or "fraud". And as you say,if you only vote your content but not assist others that is not valid...in that way I agree people can report/flagg you. Great post.

·

I completely agree ! If we don’t stand up for such things we end up just getting a small bunch of people scaring everyone into behaving exactly like they say we should. I am not saying to be selfish and only reward oneself and no one else but a healthy balance can only encourage the platform to grow! The site gives us the option anyone saying anything else is just making up their own rules and literally forcing them on others through fear. It’s everythint decentralised social media is meant to be against. Posting your best version of quality content and upvoting it only puts more in the pool for others as it’s impossible if you do other work to post/ upvote more than 10 times a day every day. So it’s just ws going to waste rather than building to reward people more. If we don’t stand up for ourselves now it will end up a dictatorship like steemit is and also ruined.

·
·

That´s correct yes! I also don´t want to be under a dictatorship so anyone can decide how I manage my rewards. In our case, we are doing it to keep helping us and others. Is not wrong in also having your own reward if you can.
I indeed want this to be succesful so I can have a decent income. I will continue rewarding me , cuz
i do awesome posts, and also you so yeah, Keep voting for you and others hahaa 😜 😬 🙃 😋

Haha I think the people with low self esteem want to call it ‘narcissism ’ I call it recognition of ones own contribution and that of other talented indivuals :)

Liking your own stuff and yourself and appreciating others doesn’t make you a narcissist it makes you healthy.

Great post! I agree with your opinions and observations @ultaviolet regarding this self-upvoting, but being able to stand on one's own two feet is natural to human behaviour and there's nothing wrong with it than awaiting on other people to award you especially when you really put your time and energy to create quality content.

Cute natural YinYang, right?

·

Ah almost yeah!!!!! I will now call it that good spot

I just joined yesterday and I would have never guessed that self voting is considered bad etiquette on Whaleshares.

I wonder if I should go back and flag my intro post to make amends.

·

Hahaha well the site encourages it yet certain people seem to have a personal rule against it. So far the people that had a go at me for it one of them posts other people’s artwork whilst upvoting himself ten times a day with 40 dollars and the other in over two weeks has posted two short posts complaining about how people use the site and nothing else. The jury is out I guess so I thought I would make a discussion on it. I think there are so many ways you can spoil ws and it’s about using balance to make some money and help the platform grow by sharing good content, interacting etc im not sure about any of these hard and fast rules as most of the pll who complain are not rly adding that much value anyway for various other reasons.

·
·

I ended up pulling my vote after someone on Discord also mentioned it. I just thought that if i wasn't willing to vote for my own post, why would anyone else?

I'm glad that you brought this up and I'm really hoping that Whaleshares doesn't get spoiled, because I don't want to end up learning Russian on Golos.

·
·
·

Haha I’m on golos not used it for a long long time tho ONO is really nice too :) you can’t self upvote and everyone’s vote is worth the same but it’s written into the platform rather than being enforced by someone random

·
·
·
·

This is the first I've heard of ONO.
I am very curious to see how you would rank each platform,
from best to "Oh my God they flagged me!"

·
·
·
·
·

hahahah well on ono you can't flag so far it's my favourite, I like ws layout rly but I like the core rules in ono and the whole community so far have just been so lovely and no ones an idiot and no one goes around making up their own rules and flagging people on some high and mighty trip. Im still using everything right now and giving them all chance over the next year.

I’m not very good at doing what people tell me to do 🤭 I tend to do the opposite haha

By any chance did your ancestors fight against the Yankees or might you be Irish?

I'll check ONO, that sounds awesome!

·

@gonzo, you may want to check out my comment on the issue, but you should definitely not feel bad for self-rewarding, especially if you put in the time and effort to create quality content. :)

Self upvoting is not a problem. However this is social media that offers opportunity to grow for users. Many newbie can't grow because they not get upvoted from super power whale. Self upvoting should be fair too. If one only say a little words then do self upvoting I think it is unfair though it is ok to the system. Let's give chance for newbie to grow.

·

I feel newbies are less likely to grow actually when people don’t self upvote as they then ‘need’ votes off more powerful whales and keep all the money in the top quartile giving no one new a chance. When people are at least getting guaranteed income daily they are far more likely ‘in my eyes at least’ to be more fair in who they upvote.
