I love the public sphere. We should all love it. The public sphere is not the public domain. It is something very different. According to the German philosopher Jurgen Habermas the public sphere is a place or platform where the general population or citizenship can formulate and express their opinion, where they all have equal access, where people can assemble and debate on how they wish to be governed, without corporate or commercial restraint. I can think of no greater living proof of the public sphere than an amazing online platform called Whaleshares.

The public sphere does not have to be a physical space or community, such as a public meeting say, it can be virtual. Mediums such as television, radio and newspapers are not the public sphere itself they are the media of the public sphere. Increasingly in the digital age the public sphere is becoming an even more powerful place to be. The uniting quality and empowering effect of the internet has expanded the public sphere to a whole new level. However, platforms like Steemit and Whaleshares takes this to a new further and higher level.

Whaleshares is, in my humble opinion, an absolutely ideal means of exposing and expanding the public sphere. It is perfect for enriching the public sphere. It could easily be argued that in recent decades the public sphere's traditional media has been contaminated by proprietor interests and satisfying the needs of commerical sponsorship. Political forces have also had an effect on traditional media outlets, be that newspapers, broadcasters or other forms. Just like other social media platforms Whaleshares is able to bypass all of this, but due to the less censored and decentralised content I find on Whaleshares I think the platform has far more to contribute to the public sphere than Facebook or Twitter....and Steemit.

(These salons depicted in this painting were created by women to facilitate informal discourse amongst intellectuals during The Enlightenment era.)

It is an incredibly exciting time for the public sphere as a result of the introduction of Whaleshares. Particularly in relation to the matter of chain governance. The quality of content is like nothing I have witnessed on any other social media platform. It's amazing what you can inspire from people if you ask them to think about the content they are producing before sharing it. And this is what Whaleshares is cleverly seeking to do. By incentivising with rewards from people supporting your work we are creating not only a unique knowledge enriching community with powerful players, but also a whole new element to the public sphere.
