Due to the massive success of the the last event I am almost obligated to improve the quality of the writing practices... the effort and the dedication that all participants demonstrated deserves it. I originally planned to add brush calligraphy many months later, but some participants already seem to be trying to make characters with a brush. Therefore I will start with a brief introduction of the main styles and the basics of Chinese brush calligraphy
Debido al gran éxito del evento anterior, debo aumentar la calidad de las prácticas diarias de escritura china... el esfuerzo y la dedicación de los participantes no merece nada menos. Inicialmente, pensé en añadir la caligrafía con pincel mas luego, pero como algunos participantes intentaron hacer los caracteres con pincel, vamos a empezar a trabajar las técnicas básicas de la caligrafía china... empecemos conociendo su historia y los principales estilos existentes.
What is Chinese calligraphy? | ¿Qué es la caligrafía china?
Chinese calligraphy (shūfǎ 书法/書法) is considered as one of the four forms of art of ancient Chinese literati, the other three are the board game know as go (wéiqí 围棋/圍棋), painting, and playing stringed musical instruments. Chinese calligraphy is embedded with a lot of spiritual tradition, it is addressed as a method to register through the strokes of artistic figures the motion of the energy of a cheerful life.
La caligrafía china (shūfǎ 书法/書法) es considerada uno de las cuatro formas de arte de los antiguos literati chinos, las otras tres son el juego de mesa conocido como go (wéiqí 围棋/圍棋), la pintura y tocar instrumentos de cuerda. Esta forma de arte se encuentra rodeada de una gran tradición espiritual, de la caligrafía se dice que es la forma de registrar el movimiento de la energía de una vida plena a través de los trazos de figuras artísticas.

Seal Script
Seal script is a particular style of Chinese calligraphy that was the formal writing style of the Qín State during the Eastern Zhōu dynasty (東周; pinyin: Dōngzhōu; 770–255 AC). This script style is mostly used on seals (hence the English name) and in artistic expressions such as painting and calligraphy. Since seals functions as legal signatures, the seal script is still ubiquitous despite most of the Chinese population being unable to read it.

La caligrafía de sello es un estilo de caligrafía que se originó en el Estado de Qín durante la Dinastía Zhōu del Este (東周; pinyin: Dōngzhōu; 770–255 BCE). Este estilo es mayormente usado en sellos (de allí su nombre) y en algunas expresiones artísticas como la pintura y la caligrafía. Debido a que los sellos cumplen la función de firmas legales, la caligrafía del sello sigue muy presente a pesar de que la mayoría de la población china no puede leerla.

Clerical Script
The clerical script (lìshū 隶书 /隸書) is a variation of Chinese calligraphy were characters tend to be wider than the other variation, even some clerical scripts characters are square. The clerical script stroke shapes tend to be more linear than seal script strokes. Also, stroke width variation is allowed while it remains constant on seal script style. This calligraphy style is currently used in practical applications such as advertisements and is perfectly legible.

La caligrafia de escriba (lìshū 隶书 /隸書) es una variación de la caligrafía china en la que los caracteres tienden a ser más anchos, incluso algunos caracteres llegan a ser cuadrados. Las formas de los trazos tiende a ser más lineal que en la caligrafía de sello. Además, se permite variar el ancho de los trazos mientras que este permanece constante en la caligrafía de sello. La caligrafía es utilizada en anuncios publicitarios y es perfectamente legible.

Semi-cursive and cursive script
The semi-cursive script (xíngshū 行书/行書) is a style in which the brush leaves the paper less often and characters are less angular and more rounded. Also, most of the strokes in one character are connected but the brush leaves the paper to separate different characters. This style is not that hard to read since character's appearance resembles a lot those of regular script.
In the cursive script style (cǎoshū 草书/草書) the brush never leaves the paper, all characters and strokes are connected. Characters are drastically simplified and are difficult to understand for people unfamiliar with it. The cursive script is the source of Japanese Hiragana.
Caligrafía semi-cursiva y cursiva
En la caligrafía semi-cursiva (xíngshū 行书/行書) el pincel se levanta del papel con menor frecuencia y los caracteres son menos angulados y más redondeados. Además, la mayoría de los trazos dentro de un caracter están conectados pero el pincel es levantado para separar los diferentes caracteres. Este estilo no es dificil de leer por su similitud con el estilo estándar de caligrafía.
En la caligrafía cursiva (cǎoshū 草书/草書), el pincel no se levanta del papel, todos los caracteres y trazos están conectados. Los caracteres son drásticamente simplificados y difíciles de entender para quienes no están familiarizados con ello. La caligrafía cursiva originó el Hiragana japones.

Regular script
The regular script (kǎishū 楷书/楷書) is the newest version of Chinese calligraphy styles it appeared in the Eastern Hàn and Cáo Wèi dynasties ( 200 CE). It is the standard version used in printed publications of Chinese script.

El estilo regular de caligrafía (kǎishū 楷书/楷書) es la variación más reciente de las técnicas de caligrafía, apareció durante la dinastías Hàn del Este y Cáo Wèi (200 DC). Es la versión estándar usada en el sistema de escritura chino.

After this brief introduction of Chinese calligraphy, let's start with the most basic element... how to hold and move the brush. Below is a video of a Chinese woman explaining the technique, you should go on and practice by yourself :smile:

For those of you that are only interested on learning how to write Chinese characters with pen or pencil let's keep practicing with more characters.
