Branding.. Marketing.. A while ago, when I hear branding what comes to my mind is an Image or how b a product is packaged beautifully but over time, as my interest in business grew I realized that branding is so much more. Both tools can be likened to the English words push and pull, branding can be said to be pull while marketing is push.

Branding tells the audience who you are. It is a declaration of your values, principles, culture, inspiration mission etc. It is an instrument used to create a positive reaction on what you are selling, it entails how the audience sees you and what you want them to feel when they hear about you..

Marketing is simply the tools used to convey the information of your brand, ranging from social media marketing, to television and radio broadcast , to SEO etc. You can market anyway you decide depending on what is in vogue but your brand still remains the same.
Like I said concerning the push and pull. Marketing pushes your products or services to people, it screams buy me!.. While branding pulls people to your products or services, it says this is who I am! it is what remains in the minds of your audience even when they don't buy your products at the time of marketing..

Which is most important?

They are both important tools for your business. But one should be in place before the other, therefore branding should always comes first. When you push your products or services to people and succeed in getting their attention, branding keeps the attention. So you need to define what makes you special, that is your values, principles etc, all that needs to be in place before you start marketing. Consider it this way, marketing brings new clients while branding maintains old clients, hence the two are very important. Branding is exactly what will make your clients decide if they want to continue with your service or your products.

A lot of start ups place so much importance to marketing that they forget about branding. Human behaviors are influenced by emotions, branding can either create a good emotion or a bad one which can make your business a success or a failure. So think of the emotions you want to create while working on your brand, once people feel connected to your brand they will become loyal customers. You can have the best marketing strategy but if you fail to live up to what your brand represents, you'll loose your clients.

How does branding maintain clients

Branding entails your values and mission and principles and what you want the audience to feel when they hear about you etc. So If your products succeeds in delivering on the promises, then clients will come back over again.

A good marketing strategy can make you successful but branding will give you a lasting success. Understanding the difference and knowing their place will help you build your business..
