The Sunland Baobab might have fallen but the legend of the great Baobab tree lives on forever!

This tree was situated in Modjadjiskloof South-Africa, up until recently but it's life span has sadly reached an end and as such it has fallen after so many years. I took these pictures on a visit there when I was much younger. This tree has reached levels of fame for various reasons, here are a few;

  • The Sunland ‘Big Baobab’ was famous internationally for being the widest of its species in the world.
  • This is a tree that symbolizes Africa.
  • This tree was Carbon dated at more than 1700 years old before it fell.
  • And of course it was a cover model for the Wall Street Journal once.

Now what is more amazing than that, is that when a Baobab tree reaches the age of 1000 years plus, they start hollowing out in the middle. This forms a cave like structure within the tree as you can see on the image above.

The Sunland Baobab tree housed a fully furnished bar on the inside of its hollow.

There are quite a few baobab trees in South-Africa that holds space on the South-African tourism board, however this one must be one of the most unique!
