Know what you're committing to

The Community Engagement Challenge is a 14-day marathon where you are encouraged, mentored, and supported by community-oriented people.

Endearingly nicknamed "The Beast" by former participants, the Community Engagement Challenge was created to give newbies the fundamentals of creating good posts while fostering healthy community relations through meaningful engagement. The parameters are meant to push you; that's why it's called a challenge.

Begins January 18, 2019 at 8 PM Eastern
Ends February 1, 2019 at Midnight Pacific

300 Words Minimum

The idea of creating posts with 300 words minimum is to get you into the habit of writing and persuading the creative flow. In social media platforms like this, our words and how they are expressed is a reflection on how we want to be perceived. It gives depth to what we are sharing.

If you are a photographer, write an introduction. Tell us the who, what, where, when and why of it. That goes for music and art and poetry. Bring us on a journey with you. That little bit of text will help drive conversations.
Here's a great article about post length.

Featured Photo

One of the lessons in this challenge is to teach you best practices so you can go into the blogging world and build your community. Are Your Posts Getting Attention? Tips From A Manual Curator touches on the importance of a good photo, title and first 50 characters for an optimized chance of getting noticed.

In addition to having a featured photo, it must be properly cited. Anything with a watermark is a red flag that you are using images which are not licensed. Photo agencies are very protective of their images. They scour the net for stolen images. They can issue a DMCA takedown notice. They can fine you. They can take you to court for damages.

If you don't use your own images, visit Pixabay or Pexels. Do not trust Google images or anything from wikipedia because there are countries that do not acknowledge U.S. copyright laws. That does not make it acceptable for use.

Stolen images will be flagged and a coach will help guide in best practices. Once a post is edited, the flag will be removed. Failure to edit once a request has been made will be reported to @whaleguardians. Remember - we are here to mentor. Our goal is to build you up - not tear you apart.

Exclusivity

One of the new requirements is that we are asking for Whaleshares exclusive content. This means that your posts should not be published anywhere else.

#thebeast

This tag was created specifically for the Community Engagement Challenge. As it begins to trend, there will be a lot of tag jumpers. We can't do anything about that but to encourage them to join the next challenge and be a cheerleader for our registered participants.

Encouragement is the key.
Tag jumpers are technically not doing anything wrong. They want the support that might flow from a popular tag. That's okay! Become a mentor to them. Let them know where #thebeast comes from. There's enough room to build them up too.

Please only use #thebeast tag ONCE a day.

If you post more than once a day it will be up to the coach to select which one gets added to the daily curation list.

How to Beat the Beast

Prepare now.

:point_up_2: That's basically it! "Prepare now."

There are a whole lot of challenges around the Whaleshares ecosphere. Keep participating in them! Just make sure that you are using the proper tags and your posts are meeting challenge requirements. We're not here to replace other challenges and contests.

If you're planning to finish as a SAVAGE BEAST then start thinking about 14 posts for the end of the month. We've got a few days to prepare. Get to it!
