SAMHAIN OR HALLOWEEN

It is the Celtic New Years party it starts on the evening before the 31st of October although the Celtics are using the moon calendar and that does not run up the same time.

With a big fire, they will celebrate the fourth big fest of the year. EVERYTHING starts out from darkness, so is the fourth festivity the beginning of the dark winter the beginning of their new year.

The Celts believe in reincarnation so also of the earth, in winter time it is time to draw back and to remission what you have done or did the last year to let go of what overcame you.

This time of the year the border to the death and living is small, some people still will put a candle in front of their window,
so that loved ones from the other side would find their way home.

Here in Belgium, you have all holy day, which is a day after Halloween, people celebrate by going to the cemetery and make the graves of their loved ones clean,
leave some flowers, meet up with other family and sometimes share a meal.
It always makes sense for me this time of a year, it is dark early evening, it gets light later in the day. A time I want to not do too much, finish what I started and think where to start of when the light is coming back.

Original and logic food for Samhain or Halloween are of course all recipes with pumpkins but that be because it just is that time of a year that there are growing loads, so much that it was a good idea to start playing with them, fantastic cutouts we see every year.
Many houses show them with candles in at their front door.

I like it especially knowing that this habit is also out of old times although they did not do it with pumkins by then but with beet (like beetroot but in white).

Candles got put in front of the houses to scare lost souls away as a protection for bad luck in that household.
People first would close all the lights and fires of, than had a big party with a mega fire where everyone burned their thoughts they wanted to get rid of, than took fire of the pile and lighted a fire in front of their house with it.

I find it a strong thought to have all the fires lit by the same flames, flames which have been fed with all peoples bothering thoughts.

Favourite foods around this time because it is also the time that all cattle have to come indoors it is time to say goodbye to the older ones and let their blood fertilise the acres where you want the crop to grow the next year. The meat is prepared for wintertime, the evening itself they celebrate with apples, pumpkin, hazelnut, nuts, corn, pommegranates...

But the way we celebrate Halloween going from door to door to get a cookie ar a sweet, and many times a little money. Most of the times dressed up as scary as can be, which by the way also came to existence by all the things combined from what I told you in the beginning, is the most common way we know to celebrate.
As it is like a new hype even houses start to be dressed up around that time like with Christmas.

Anyway I do love the time in all aspects, I like to remission about what went on and where to go, I like to visualize old worries being burned of in a life fire. I like to cook what fruits earth gave me...

BUT MOST OF ALL THE FUN PART

the day starts to be shorter and what is nicer than to decorate the house a bit, or the romantic way with nuts and leaves which gives you a warm welcome at home, or the funny fantasy way, with some spider rag here and there, blacklight little ghost hanging on the wall witch faces and loads of candles in pumpkins.

Food made for Halloween are scary fingers in bloody sauce
.... or in snot it is whatever you prefer! 22883200_10155812942380789_2048136124_n.jpg

Mix it all very well in a big bowl, make a long thumb thick saucissage out of it,
turn it into plastick and put it in the fridge for an hour.
Than take of little pieces as long as a finger of the saussage and form them
as a finger making little stripes where finger folds are,
put some eggwith on top of the finger and press an almond in the top,
bake them of on 180 degrees celcius, or till they are nice and brownish. 45033158_10156768186370789_5167163252739670016_o.jpg
