Children love fire and they also love cooking stuff on it, so today's mission was a back to basics 'see how long it takes to boil a pot of water without using a stove or a lighter' kinda day.

When I started prepping a year ago this flint stick was the first thing I bought. It produces an incredible amount of sparks even in heavy wind and is good for 5000 strikes, making it way better than a lighter.

This is the moment Esteban figured out it was also a whistle.

The fire took no more than a few minutes to get started using the tepee method, seen below along with a few other methods.

I wanted Esteban to figure out a way to support the cooking pot above the fire.

And if I'm gonna be honest he wasn't great at this but having seen what I did, I feel sure he will be able to come up with his own system next time.

Luna loved standing over the cooking pot stirring her 'soup' and serving me mouthfulls with her stick.

Besides growing food, making fire and cooking food must surely be up there with the most important survival skills?

Next time we will focus on foraging and making basic shelter in the wild.

Gotta get 'em started young ;)
