Poetry Collection: Narcissism

clayboynPosted for Everyone to comment on, 5 years ago3 min read

I wrote these when in the aftermath of one of my beautifully tragic relationships. It's a recurring pattern that I've spent the better part of the last two years working on learning how to not repeat. You probably don't need to know about all of that to relate though, but I figured some context as to why I wrote several poems on narcissistic behaviors and codependent relationships could help. It seems that many people confuse Romeo & Juliette with a romance. The art is all from my time spent with the deep dream generator.

Lovebomb

The currents of denial are flowing softly,
like a lullaby caressing you down the dream.

Will you notice the patterns are cycling faster?
The waves keep on swelling, busting at the seam.

The land of over ripened smiles is intoxicating,
as fast as love blossoms it starts to ferment.

Sour notes buried behind a mountain of sugar;
The rot still lingers if you can catch the scent.

Each new bruise grows like a temporary reminder-
of that same old wound that you never let heal.

Despair and suffering can be masked for a while,
but some scars you're just not able to conceal.

Gaslight

Tell me those things you know I'd love to hear,
Pour your sweetest venom into my ear.

Careful with the dose, I don't want to know,
Keep me hanging on, never let me go.

Groom all my opinions to match your own,
My validation's the best you've ever known.

We may disagree, but you'll always win,
Show me it's my fault, punish me again.

I need to suffer, so put me through hell,
Just be careful to never lift that vale.

Pray caution that you never let me see,
Though I may be hooked, you're addicted to me.

The Cracks Begin To Show

Dismiss free will with the thoughts you barter,
And claiming yourself some righteous martyr.

You've lost control yet wont think of respite,
Now the only one who still thinks you're right.

Will you sing the same song when judgment comes?
Your freedom for their free will, costly sums.

What if that was your father or mother,
Or maybe your sister or your brother?

What if that was your son or your daughter?
Would you still be hunting them to slaughter?

You've become the frenzied monster chasing,
End the toxic thoughts, stop your mind's racing.

How could you excuse this misbehaving,
When you're the one that you should be saving?

Your emptiness shows through all of those cracks,
Focus on yourself and find what it lacks.

Place all those old excuses on the shelf,
Get it right this time, learn to love yourself.
