Golden Retriever

Today I was allowed to do a photo shoot of a young Golden Retriever of 8 months. And that I found a great opportunity to tell you more about the Golden Retriever in general.

For many a very familiar dog in terms of appearance. With many a beloved dog because of the character.

History!

The ancestors of the Golden Retriever are probably a yellow Retriever and a Tweed Water Spaniel, a now extinct breed. Later it was crossed with a Bloodhound and a red Setter. The breed was officially recognized in 1960.

Appearance!

Symmetrically built, lively, powerful dog with good going and a friendly expression.
The coat is flat or wavy with good feathering and a dense, water-resistant undercoat. Any shade from gold to cream is allowed, but not red or mahogany.
The height of the Golden Retriever is between 50 - 60 cm. The weight varies from 25 - 35 kilos.

Character

His affectionate, reliable, friendly and friendly nature makes him a very nice roommate. He is intelligent, full of confidence and likes to be with the people. When he gets enough exercise in the wild, he is a quiet dog in the house.

Care

The Golden Retriever has a half-long, double coat that consists of coat hair and wool hair. This variety loses some hair daily, but in the moulting periods the hair loss can increase enormously. When combing the long hair on the hind legs, called the pants, and the tail, the brushing of the coat is not recommended. During a brushing session too many wool hairs are removed. The dog needs its wool to maintain its temperature, both in summer and in winter. Instead of being brushed, the Golden Retriever can be treated during the moulting period in a grooming salon where the so-called washing / blowing method is used. To enjoy a well-groomed Golden Retriever, from time to time, parts of the coat will also need to be shortened and / or cut to shape with an effector scissors.

Health

Because there are also a lot of health problems with the Golden Retriever, the various breed clubs have started to check more strictly in recent years. There is a stricter breeding policy and obligations are imposed before they can start breeding. The following studies are compulsory for the parents: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and the ECVO eye examination. Furthermore, DNA tests are often carried out on Ichtichyose and PRA-1 & PRA-2.

As with every dog should be the advice,

Think before you start! You don't have a dog for a while, but for his whole life!
