Rock Climbing in Richmond, Virginia

Canal over the James River

When I was on my Civil War trip over the summer, I was in Richmond, Virginia, and I visited the Tredegar Iron Works. The majority of the artillery of the Confederate Army was produced here along with the iron plating for the CSS Virginia, which was the first Confederate Ironclad warship.

But that is not what this post is about. This is about me crossing over the James River and seeing turtles sunbathing on a log.

After I saw the turtles sunbathing though, I saw a huge wall with people gearing up to climb it. I haven't taken any sports shots in a while, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to hang out and get some pretty cool pictures.

Don't worry, he isn't picking a wedgie out of his butt crack, he is just getting chalk on his hands so he can get a better grip on the wall as he climbs.

He started to make short work of the wall and scurried up it like a real life Spiderman.

After going spread eagle on that last shot, I could have sworn he was picking a wedgie this time, but when I was checking the pictures, he was just getting more chalk on his hands. I don't know how they wear those harnesses without getting massive wedgies.

As he started getting higher and close to this ledge, I thought it would be a cool picture to get really far away to show the scale of the wall, so I turned around and started running back. I had on my 100mm lens for this entire shoot, so I had to get pretty far back for this shot to be able to show all of this wall. It kind of sucked because I stepped in a little bit of a swampy area, so my shoes were wet for the rest of the day. At least I got the shot.

Then after I got that shot, I ran back up to the wall and got pretty much underneath him so he was kicked dust and other crap down at me. I think he was looking down and laughing at me while he was kicking stuff at me.

In all seriousness though, rock climbing takes some amazing strength and skill. I tried rock climbing with my brother a while ago and it scared the crap out of me. I do not like heights at all, and when I had to repel back over the ledge, it took me about 30 minutes to do it and I ended up sliding back on my stomach over the edge.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my pictures and read the story about the rock climbers. You are awesome.

Rock climbing is tons of fun. I used to ve a little good at it. Sold all my gear though before i joined the Navy

That story at the end was about the time i went climbing with you, lol. That was the only time i had been rock climbing outside of a gym.

wow that really does take a lot of skill and trust in yourself and your abilities, cheers for the awesome pictures. I can only image how exhilarating it is to do it x

Thanks. I tried climbing before. Not my thing. lol. I'll stick to the gym and taking pictures.

Oops -- sorry about your fall, I don't like heights too even when I stand at the veranda of a ten storey building 😜
I haven't tried rock climbing before in my life. I loved the story behind your shots... And yes! this kind of stuff use great amount of strength and stamina.

I am not a fan of heights either. That is why i wasnt good at rock climbing.

It's relatable -- am no fan either... I prefer the base area 😂

I'm most impressed with the fact that bolts were allowed to be placed and that active climbing is allowed. What is the wall a part of? Most all bridges I know of are strictly off limits to climbing.

I would LOVE to have that wall near me, I would be on it regularly, and that is with natural formations all around.

This wall is right next to the bridge and is set up for climbers. It is a big recreation spot. It is pretty cool.

It's a very challenging sport ... I like rock climbing.

Looks really cool , my life adventures

Hey @derangedvisions

I have two people to commend in this post; You and The Guy Climbing The Rock

You did a very good job because all those shots are looking great.

coming to the guy climbing, he did a lot of work there, the kind of hidght he ascend on is not just a thing we can tagged as fun alone, there are some people that cant even mount a stood, posibly cos they are Acrophobia.

Good Job Here
