Daily photography: A visit to Lucca, Italy
Ask people who have visited Tuscany to recommend a quaint city in that region. Most will probably tell you to check out Pisa, Florence or Lucca. I'd like to introduce you to the latter.
Lucca is located at the foot of the Apuan Alps, near the coast of Versilia. It has well-preserved Renaissance walls that encircle its historic center and cobblestone streets, a beautiful square built on the remains of a Roman amphitheatre (Piazza dell'Anfiteatro), two towers, and several lovely religious buildings like the Church of San Michele in Foro and the Basilica of San Frediano.
I spent a day in Lucca in 2016 and enjoyed it very much. It had a lot to do with our guide, who looked and sounded like a kid in a candy shop. He was so happy to tell us about the place where had been born and raised! I have rarely met such a passionate tour guide...
Lucca is 60 kilometres away from Florence. It is also the perfect escape if you are looking for a break from heavy crowds.
