Plants/Animals Theme - Snake in the grass

This picture was taken when I was staying at a plantation in Virginia while I was shooting for the Civil War book I was working on. I was out taking pictures of birds when I noticed this snake slithering around in the leaves and moss near a tree. I got a bunch of pictures of it and as I got closer and closer, the snake began to coil back as if it were preparing to strike. This is about as close as I wanted to get because I think if I were to get any closer the snake would have lunged forward towards me.

I hope that you like the photo. This image is my entry in the #wednesdayphotochallenge by @photochallenge and the theme is plants/animals. This is a great challenge, so make sure to visit @photochallenge to participate in the daily contests.

Lol, awesome. I would have totally gotten close too. Found a snake in Sasebo by a temple. Got close to it. Then didn't know if it was a Habu or not.

I remember climbing a tree in our front yard in Japan and then there was a snake up there with me and I almost grabbed it. I fell about 15 feet onto my back because it was a Habu and it scared the crap out of me. Remember when we went and saw the Habu and Mongoose fight? You should go to one of those and make a post about it. That would be awesome.

Yup! Habu/Mongoose fight is definitely on my list while here.

Probably snakes dangerous to shoot, especially from close range, and when they are poisonous))) so very good photo.

Snakes always make cool photos. Luckily this one wasn't poisonous. I am glad that you liked the picture.

Cool composition.
Did you crop to keep the snakes head at the rule of 3rds grid?

I do most of my cropping in camera when I am taking the picture so that I don't waste much of my sensor space. I crop as little as possible in post processing. I am glad you like the composition. It is always nice when shooting wildlife and they work with you a little bit to make a decent composition.

it is amazing that you managed to get a picture even though it is a little risky for you. you are great and brave.

Thanks. I think it was just a rat snake though, so if it did bite me, it wouldn't have hurt much.

Wow! That's some kind of bravery to take a photograph of a snake. I for one can't do that

It is probably a mixture of bravery and stupidity, lol.

Is there reflection on the snake or it was like shining by its own color in silver?

I think I would not have approached and more to see his black color but they all scare me, I would have run out of the place without a picture
I am beautiful the picture, I prefer to see the snakes in photos

What a good snake photo! For a moment I thought it was a digital design, but the approach you gave to this animal is very well achieved, thanks for sharing, regards

Awesome capture, the shot makes me feel like that beautiful fella is going to pop out of my screen and give me a nip on the nose!! Is Pixel discord gone now?? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
