Getting WLS instead of whalestake?

Quick question: I'm new to Whaleshares and am looking for some different Pods to join. Even though most are free, there is that 0.1 WLS transaction fee to join, but all of my rewards seem to go to whalestake immediately. Is powering down the best option?
