Recording music is hard! #4 - Sudden Inspiration...

On my way to buy a mic I was struck with some heavy inspiration.

This song is my oldest. It’s almost ten years old already. I’ve posted an old demo (check here for the Art and Artist demo here before. has always felt a little too “pop” for me. By pop I mean cheesy, TOO melodic, TOO clean. I tried changing the strumming pattern, the tempo and the way I sing. I started crying the song and slowed it down a lot and it sounded better but still not hitting the spot.

After recording with my friend I learned that I don’t need to put as much power into recording as I do when singing without a mic. I can sing at lower octave and raise the vocals in the mix so that it isn’t as quiet compared to the guitar. Then I can add that crying voice to the chorus with some distortion to find that feeling that I know is there. Then maybe I’ll add some sporadic backup vocals to smooth it out a bit. I’m not sure how it’ll sound when I try it out but in my head it sound a great! The only think I’m worried about is how to EQ and add reverb. This will be a good chance to practice those skills.

Bass and percussion are something I’m totally clueless about still. I think I need to listen to a lot of music and focus specifically on that to see what is possible. I was hoping to finish a song every week or two but I have a feeling this first one might take a bit longer. Or maybe I can finish the main vocals and guitars recordings at that pace and add extra stuff later as I come up with it.

I really can’t explain why this all felt so uninteresting to me until now and suddenly the process is so exciting. It must be that I finally believe it is possible.

I’m not sure if I’ll feel the song is there yet after these changes, but I know I’m getting closer with this idea! And I love sharing this creative process with you. I’m not sure how interesting it is to the casual reader, but I really appreciate all the feedback I’ve recieved from fellow musicians!
