A Monster in Paris (2011) by Bibo Bergeron (REVIEW)

This French animated movie tells a story of two friends, Emil and Raoul, who will randomly create a “monster”. This will cause panic in Paris, in spite of the other disaster that occurs simultaneously – the great flood of 1910. But cabaret-singer Lucille will learn the true nature of the monster and help him to show his talent. An interesting mix of events will follow.

The director Bibo Bergeron, who is famous for “Shark Tale” and “The Road to El Dorado”. The animation is great and creates a very beautiful and charming image of Paris from that period of time. The story is relatively original and although it reminds a lot from the “Phantom of the Opera”, the events are unusual and each brings a surprise.

The disadvantage is the insufficient good track of those events and how they are presented, so the movie loses its dynamics, or too much (as the moment when the plan of Raoul, Emil and Lucille suddenly collapse and the big chase begins).

The characters are unequally developed, but for this kind of movie they are super – funny, special (especially as they are designed) and very likable (except the police chef – the bad one). Therefore, the movie is very interesting for kids but grown up people will enjoy it too.
