Invest in yourself

Once read a quote that said 'luck is opportunity meets preparation' which to me literally means if you want something you prepare for it!
So I really find it difficult when I still see people that wants luck to come their way without doing anything, they want something yet not prepared to do what it takes to get what they want.
I have a friend that studied Electrical Engineering and he can't even fixed a socket and all I hear him say or complain about is the education system in the country (yes I agree that education system in the country is a work in progress) but how about investing in yourself and not just complain all the time?
He is not the only product of Electrical Engineering in that school which means their are others doing fine, those that refuse to let their situation limit them, others that invested in themselves!
Life is give and take and you can't give what you don't have!
So this friend of mine have graduated for a while and he had been searching for a job for a almost a year now without anything significant and he would come to me and tell me how his friends are getting the jobs because of connection and how getting job is all about knowing the people at the top, I got really tired of this one day and asked him these questions.

What value do you have to offer if an organization employ you today? What do you have to offer? What can you do? Since you left school have you thought of investing in yourself? What skills do you have?

He felt overwhelm with all these questions and felt I was attacking him and was reluctant to say anything but I told him am just curious and I just want to know so he said that the company that employ him will train him of course (well this the problem, the feeling of entitlement)
So I asked why should they invest in you when you not ready to invest in yourself?
At this point he got really angry, so I tired to communicate my point in another way, I said how about you go do internship or volunteer work in an electrical organization, this way you get to learn the pratical aspect of your job, meet people, network and help yourself to grow.

Guess what he said?
Just forget it! I can't work for free! Ever!
He stood up and walk away in anger.

Well I still don't get it, the world is evolving and if you don't evolve with it you will be left behind
How some persons prefer money over growth baffles me.
If you want something go get it be sure it won't come to your door step by just wanting it and if you can't invest in yourself then why will anyone take that risk?
