CRAZY WEEK AFTER CRAZY WEEK!

And what a week it was!

As I sit here, frozen, attempting to move forward with life, I can't help but remember the god old days... like last week. Travel was much easier last week, and travel we did. A number of opportunities came up for us, and we tried our best to help out where we could, even if it lead to hours of driving on some of those days. Here's a breakdown of what went down last week.

LAST WEEK - A CRAZY, SPECIAL, HELPFUL WEEK INDEED

EPIC CHICKEN COOP REMODEL - 7 Man Team

Is all started early, very early on Sunday morning. A small handful of our tribe was in the vehicle by 5:30 am, heading for a drive that would put us at a friends house by 7:00 am, just before sunrise. We were meeting with six other men to finish a chicken coop for another friend. The friend was on his way back from Texas and wasn't home, so we "snuck" over to bless him.

Included in our makeover was finishing the battens, adding some trim around the roof, finishing the chicken wire on the chicken run, covering the chicken run with a protective netting, installing a door in the chicken run, adding a layer of rocks inside and outside of the run to prevent predators from sneaking underneath, adding a bale of straw for insulation inside the coop, building and filling a dust bath, mounting and filling a gravity-fed oyster shell dispenser, adding some door latches, installing a light switch, and putting a little bit of décor on the coop too. Sure, it sounds like a lot, but remember, we had seven men and a handful of children working on it.

MOVING A FOOD FOREST (Not My Idea)

The next morning some of us and a man and his sons from the chicken coop remodel drove down to visit Jeff from Bobblehead Homestead. The goal was to move his food forest to his new homestead. Moving dormant trees, bushes and bulbs can be a daunting task, so we were glad that a good handful of people pitched in. Many of the trees were ones that our oldest son and I had planted there a few years ago.

Included on the move were plants like Witch Hazel, Paw Paws, Wild Garlic, Elderberry, Plum, Gooseberry, Sunchokes, Daylilies, Serviceberry, Yellow Raspberries, and others. The goal is to make sure many food bearing plants are in place and bearing fruit in the future to bless our friend. Thankfully, they were all dormant this time of year. Also, Jeff was very happy about the success of the mission.

THEY WANTED US TO WATCH THEIR KID (Only 5 Days Old!!!)

Upon returning home last week from Bobblehead Homestead, some neighbors had a help request for us. The first couple of goats that kidded for them went rather well, but the third doe rejected her babies when they were born. Since she had never been allowed to keep her own babies because her previous owners wanted to get all of her milk, she has no maternal experience. That said, after one of her babies died, the other one has been a bottle baby, which means she needs to be fed by people with a bottle.

Our friends had a trip to take, and needed someone to watch their little bottle baby goat Gingerbread. They wanted us to help, so we gladly allowed Gingerbread to join us for the day. It was a special day, with a cute baby goat in the house, and the Little-Peppers had a great time "helping" out.

MOST DANGEROUS TRIP OF THE YEAR (Wood Supply Disappearing)

To finish up our helpful adventures last week, we found out a friend was running out of firewood and having trouble locating a source nearby. Rather than worry about whether his family would run out of wood and begin to get really cold, we decided to load up our truck with a load of firewood that we had, and drive it over to him. Of course he was excited and grateful, and thankfully we were able to have a safe trip, although things had already started to get cold and icy.

As I reflect on our week, I stand in awe of how much can occur in just a couple of days. Also, I'm motivated to keep my eyes and ears open so that we can help where we are able to. For many right now, it's cold out and travel has been restricted. Make sure to check on friends and neighbors nearby, and be willing to help when you're able. Enjoy your week!

Until next time…
