The Ultra Flashblast - After Relentless Pestering @merej99 Steps Up With A Piece

Pestering people for writing until they hate me is my speciality. Luckily I'm only in the early stages of this process and many of the participants are still fairly tolerant of my hard line approach. Below is a submission by @merej99

New Beginnings

Ellen looked around her new apartment with a mixed sense of relief and sadness. She ran her finger across the walls and counters as she walked by; the echoes of her shoes seeming overly loud in the empty space.

She set about cleaning the kitchen counters and stove before unpacking the box labeled “kitchen” to dig for her coffee pot. If there was one thing in the world that would comfort her, it was a fresh, hot cup of coffee.

With the brew percolating and filling the air with rich aroma, Ellen kept herself busy with finding more cleaning products to sweep and mop the floors. Breaking into a sweat, she found herself humming a silly Disney song from her childhood memories. “Wow,” she thought as she wiped the bead of sweat from her brow and looked around. “You've come a long way.”

Good or bad, she was finally independent and free to do whatever the hell she wanted. With the last pop and hiss from the coffee maker, she put down the mop and padded her way to the kitchen to rinse out her mug and pour herself the ebony brew. Ellen closed her eyes and breathed in the rich scent of Arabica beans before blowing softly into the cup and taking a cautious sip. It felt good to feel the warmth of it trail down to her stomach.

After a short break, she grabbed her brand new hammer and began to hang some of her photographs and artwork around the house. The big furniture would arrive some time tomorrow but that didn't stop her from slowly turning this empty shell into a home. My home.

Ellen had waited 18 years to leave a loveless, sexless marriage. Though she remained faithful the entire time they were together, she always felt like she was living a half life. Once their daughter went off to college, it was her turn to find the freedom and joy that she needed. She put in the time and did all of the responsible motherly things. Now those binds were gone. The dreams which were put on hold could once again seem obtainable.

The pain in her husband's eyes when she said she was leaving still made her heart heavy. He was a good man who provided for his family, but that was it. Maybe he thought it was enough to love without any intimacy. Her overtures were always ignored or laughed away as being silly. Over the years those small rejections felt like they were slowly killing her.

Taking a deep, cleansing breath, she shook away any feeling of guilt for hurting his feelings and looked around her new home.

Refilling her coffee cup, she lifted the steaming mug into the air to toast herself.
“Here's to a new beginning.”
