Forgotten Mathematicians - Aryabhata/

So, I continue to acquaint the inhabitants of Whaleshares with the great mathematicians of the past, which you either did not hear at all (al-Khorezmi) or still heard, but very long ago, at school, as authors of some obscure theorems (as in the case of Geron and Thales). But it turns out that the most interesting about the life and work of these people, the teachers of mathematics were then silent (perhaps because of the eternal shortage of hours devoted to the study of at least these cunning theorems).
In the last issue of "Forgotten Mathematicians" we left the territories adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea in the eastern direction - to Khorezm. Today we will continue our movement to the East, just as once the great Alexander did. But only we will have a different, more humane mission - the search for sources of ancient knowledge on the example of specific personalities.
Before us is ancient India, the kingdom of Ashmak (Assaka):

Here, in the leap year of 476 (the heroes of my previous stories did not have exact birth dates, but the wise Indian himself just indicated this date in one of his works), the future great mathematician and astronomer Aryabhata (Aryabhata) was born.

Otherwise, his biography corresponds to the generally accepted scenario of the Great Ancient Ones - plainly nothing is known. We only know that he received education in another kingdom - Magadha, located to the east of his homeland. In those days it was there that the largest Indian "university" - the Buddhist monastery of Nalanda, destroyed in the XII century by the Muslim fanatic Bakhtiyar Khalji. The Turkic army not only burned the entire library of Nalanda, but thousands of monks of this monastery. And now we can admire only the ruins of this ancient "university."

From the works of Aryabhata, which reached us, the mathematical and astronomical ideas of interest contain a book with an uncomplicated title "Aryabhatiya", written by the author at the age of 23. By the way, a curious detail: this is not only a scientific work, but also a poetic work consisting of 123 (also an interesting coincidence) poems. Most likely, Ariabhata presented not his discoveries, but the knowledge he received during his stay in Nalanda. But the systematization, clarification and neutralization of contradictions in the facts of their predecessors deserve no less respect than the discoveries of the ancient scientists themselves.
First, Aryabhata gives a fairly accurate value of the "pi" number, which will later be used by al-Khwarizmi. Next, for the first time it shows how to extract square and cubic roots, gives formulas for calculating the area of a circle and the volume of a sphere, gives 33 rules of arithmetic, algebra, and trigonometry.
A thousand years before Copernicus, Aryabhata assumes the unthinkable - the Earth is round and revolves around its axis, calculating the very exact dimensions of our planet and its moon moon. He also proposed the idea of a heliocentric system of the world. And the brahmanas for some reason did not burn it at the stake! Savage-s ...

India appreciated the merits of its genius. The first Indian satellite launched in 1975 into space was named after the great scientist.

Well, a traditional place for perpetuating the memory of ancient mathematicians, as you already know from the stories I published earlier, was the Moon. Yes, there is also a crater bearing the name of Aryabhata! And I do get the impression that the history of our mathematics is better known on the moon than on us.
