Vintage Bike of the Week #2 Harley Davidson Single
1930 Harley Davidson Model C 500CC Single
The big news for 2014 from Harley Davidson was the addition of a 500cc and 750cc ‘lighter version’ to the HD lineup. It presents a low entry level price point for the HD experience.
But the 2014 500cc Harley Davidson wasn’t anywhere near the first. In 1929 Harley introduced the Model C, a 500cc (30.5 cid) flathead single. The model was designed for the export market and had an original price of $255.00
In 1930 Harley changed the singles (they also made the Model B, a 350cc bike) to side valve heads which improved performance and temperature
control.
This Model C is an unrestored original that is quite rare. It came from a museum in New Zeland thought to be 1 of only 100 remaining. The world wide depression of the early 1930’s effectively killed the Harley Davidson export effort.
The Model C had a distinctive headlight/horn arrangement that gave it a very unique frontal view. The two headlights and horn set up was used at HD for several years and gives it a very distinct look.
