Ratchet & Clank

Over the past few months I have posted mostly more advanced games for those those who are very familiar with gaming.

There have been a few requests for something more kid friendly and geared more toward entry level gamers, and this game is just what the doctor ordered. Imagine a Pixar movie, but in playable game form. Ratchet & Clank is an absolutely epic adventure from beginning to end. This is one of the more feel good games I've played in a long time, the writing is just hilarious all the way through, as you travel across the galaxy to beautiful worlds, and blow up everything in sight.

This follows the same story as the 2002 original, but it is not just remastered, it has been completely rebuilt from the ground up for PlayStation 4. The developers added some elements from the newer games, but kept to the original story and feel. This game is a tribute to the Pixar style of story telling, with colorful characters, great jokes and can be appreciated by fans of all ages.

This awesomely funny story begins in a prison, where Captain Qwark, the galaxy's ultimate hero, has recently been incarcerated for unknown reasons.

Qwark receives a visit from a criminal who also happens to be his biggest fan. Quark agrees to tell the tale of how he ended up in prison, and this is also where our adventure begins.

In the same galaxy, but on a planet far far away, in a space garage much like the any mechanic's garage you find in every little town anywhere, we find a young Lombax named Ratchet. He works as a mechanic for his adopted father, but has an aspiring dream to one day become a famous Galactic Ranger, just like his hero Captain Qwark. Luckily enough, there just happens to be a spot on the team and there is a ranger tryout happening on his planet. Ratchet passes the physical exam without even breaking a sweat, but unfortunately his criminal past gets him rejected by Qwark and the Rangers.

Meanwhile, in a factory on the planet of Dr. Nefarious, the main bad guy in the game and former Galactic Ranger, there is a massive robotic army being built. All of a sudden, the factory alarm goes off as a defective warbot tries to escape. The defect escapes in a stolen ship, but the ship is heavily damaged in the escape and ends up crashing on Veldin, the home of Ratchet. Ratchet then rescues the defect seconds before the ship blows up, the defect explains that he needs to warn the Galactic Rangers. Ratchet names him "Clank" and then offers to help him get this very important information of impending doom to the Rangers.

Insomniac’s Ratchet and Clank gets you addicted right from the start by smashing everything in sight.

The sound of a thousand little metal bolts splashing everywhere each time you bash a crate, becomes almost as hypnotic as playing with bubble wrap. The work that went into this game is really amazing, from how the light reflects off surfaces to how Ratchet fiddles with his Omni-Wrench as soon a you leave the controls idle for longer than a few seconds. The story is really well written, and the character and their dialogue is superbly funny, you can see this was written with everyone in mind. The game takes on a variety of different styles of gameplay, from spaceship battles to hoverboard races, which are super fun. There is also an almost endless supply of different weapons and gadgets that you unlock as you progress though the game. Some of my more favorites items were the gun that turns your enemies into sheep, and when you get to upgrade Clank with some booster rockets turning him into your jet pack, which then lets you fly all over the place.

"My race of Blarg has a small problem. Our planet has become so polluted, overpopulated and poisonous that we are no longer able to dwell here. But I, Chairman Drek, have a solution. We are constructing a prestige new world using the choices of planetary components available. So, what does this mean to you, you might ask? Using our high sophisticated technology, which you can't possibly understand, we will extract a large portion of your planet and add it to our new one. Unfortunately, this change in mass will cause your planet to spin out of control and drift towards the sun where it will explode into a flaming ball of gas, but, of course, sacrifices must be made. Thank you for your co-operation." - Ultimate Supreme Executive Drek

It is pretty clear Insomniac has put all that they have achieved in the last fourteen years into this title.

I would highly recommend anyone buy this, and if you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber you are in luck, because it just so happens to be one of the free monthly games for March. This is a great game for young and old and especially for those first time gamers. I started playing almost exactly a week ago and was able to finish it last night, so it easily gave me about 15 hours of play time. After you have completed your first play thought you unlock the challenge mode, where you get to reply the story starting with the entire arsenal of weapons at you finger tips to then fully upgrade. This weekend I will attempt to get a platinum trophy, which is what to get if you complete the game to 100%. The game was released in April of 2016 so you can pick it up online or at your local game store probably next to nothing. It's a blast to play and I kept finding myself saying Just one more hour, and all of a sudden it was 3am.

Ratchet & Clank is a three-dimensional platform-shooter game developed by the fun loving people at Insomniac Games.

These great folks created all the other Ratchet and Clanks games as well as the upcoming 2018 Spider-Man game, which I can not wait for. Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, which means it's unfortunately only available for the PlayStation 4, this is a remastered 2002 game.

I give Ratchet & Clank a fun rating of 7/10
