Maybe You Just Want Something To Look At
Conflicting stories are one click away, they’re stacked on top of each other. One article says routine, skip it, the Vice President says National Guard, s-sk-skip both of those. Social distancing applause, sk-skip that one too, the one where people are clapping out a window from inside their home to show appreciation for medical staff. Skip.
I’ve never done this before, skip. But this is my first time skip. I’ve seen people police their pets by using every extremity they have to contain the animal as soon as someone knocks on the door, I’ve been there for those, this is different. We can’t go outside in the U.K., skip, we’re in a strange place and stuck inside. Now would be a really shitty time to hate your wife, skip. Any time would be a shitty time to hate your wife actually, or husband, whatever. I don’t think any two times would be noticeably better or worse than the other, skip. Right now would probably just suck even more. If you’re still going outside freely—doing whatever you want, whenever you want—you just haven’t experienced the full enforcement of this lockdown yet, it’s coming.
Burpees. Don’t knock it’til you try it. And a lot of stretching. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been strength training at the gym the past eight years and just want to maintain or you think this whole thing is strategic by having us police ourselves like house pets for an extended period of time making us weaker, less energetic, and less likely to fight back, burpees are different. All you need to do them is yourself.
Stand with your arms above your head. Squat down and get into a push up position—do one push up, get up. Hands above your head—repeat. Do 25 of those. Start with twice a day and work your way up to four times a day or as many as you can. Add 50 sit ups to each set.
Draw things. Whatever device you have probably has a compatible pen. If you’re familiar with any of the pay apps, I’m looking for one I can draw smoke. Multi layered, multidimensional smoke. There’s plenty of free ones out there—Autodesk Sketchbook has nice features and tools.
I’m not sure what to do, I’ve never been locked down before, this isn’t normal to me and I hope it never is. Exercising isn’t a terrible idea (it’s actually fucking great!), there isn’t enough evidence to support the following theory: exercise is stupid. Social media, sure, there’s that. You could eat until you don’t have anything left to eat but exercising and drawing aren’t bad alternatives. Or maybe just write about it. Write about what you’re not sure about because you’ve never done it and explain how you’ve never done this (stared at an abandoned looking country from the self confinement of your own walls) before. Maybe you just want something to look at.
