Many of you know that for years I plowed snow, drove trucks, ran equipment, and did many other assorted jobs that mostly had me sitting on my ass and bouncing around on uneven terrain.

This has proven to not be good for my body.

It has gotten almost unbearable for me to drive more than an hour or sit in a machine. I just turned 49 but my hip thinks I'm 65 and we've started to have some serious disagreements.

So I did something I have wanted to do for a long time

I started to work towards running my own business. Something that won't have me cooped up in a vehicle for days at a time and that will give me a bit more freedom. not time or anything like that but just freedom from relying on others to earn my living. If I do this and it isn't successful then it's my fault but at least I have a choice of who I work with and when.

Yeah, I'm now a licensed flagger

I'm going to start here and get as many tickets and skills that I can. I was approved for EI (Employment Insurance) and have 44 weeks of not having to worry about bills and can work on building the business up. After I was approved for EI I applied to WorkBC which is a provincial government agency that is here to help people with retraining, starting a small business, finding work, etc.

I had mentioned to the lady there that I was planning to take an online security course so I would be able to do site security and she sent me a contact at the college that is offering a three-week security course that also gives you several other tickets that are beneficial. One is first aid, which mine is due in a month so it's perfect timing.

So that's my story up until now. I have been pricing equipment that I will need to get going and it's not cheap but these folks will also help you get funding (business loans, etc) so that really helps. I'll need to start out with two pickups and enough signage, radios, lights, etc for a full setup and work from there. It looks like the signage for a setup will be around $8500 so I don't think I'll be able to get new pickups but that's okay. They're just for working and as long as they do their job they'll be fine.
