Beer from Cologne

It is time for another Beer Post - this time from a German region that have their special beer - Cologne! Cologne is a city of fun, great open-minded people, full of positivity and with a local special beer called the Kölsch.

What is Kölsch?

The Kölsch beer is a light ale und is served in the traditional 0.2 litre Kölsch glasses which are tall and cylindrical. There are I think 24 local breweries in Cologne specialised for this beer which is ONLY brewed in Cologne. Ideally you drink the Kölsch in an orign "Brauhaus" where the "Köbes" serves the beer. Please be careful - he will serve one after another if you don't say "no" and put the beer pad on your glass.

Früh Kölsch

One famous Brewery is the Cölner Hofbräu Früh (or just Früh) which was founded in Cologne in 1904 Peter Joseph Früh and is still owned by the Früh Clan.

Früh’s version of the Kölsch is refreshing - clean and light with a bready sweetness, some lemon fruitiness and a dry, hoppy finish. From the recipe by Peter Josef Früh it is still brewed according to the German Purity Law.
