Information: And Our Brains Still Want More

Information is not the same as intelligence. I am not going to restate a definition for each, just point out a couple of differences.

  • Information is disseminated.
  • Intelligence is coordinated.
Intelligence gathering involves research. If you are not aware, true research involves finding a new answer and not just searching through a library of data.
  • We absorb information. Yes, it is more than data- it is worth knowing.
  • Intelligence can be acted upon.

Information can feed the brain. Intelligence can change it.

I have always loved aviation. Never thought it a dumb science just because it is centered around a physical skill- or at least was (drones). But you do not appreciate what's involved in aviation until you start doing. And, the experiences of aviation are difficult to put into words because there are so few comparisons.

For one thing, aviation occurs in three dimensional space, not just the two of normal life... Hold your horses... this is meant as a joke. Lay the paper flat- one line moves the stick figure forward and back, the other line moves sideways. That's two lines. The third would fall through the paper, or heaven forbid, up in defiance of gravity.

So I was inspired to write this post by @lindahas. She has some truly amazing, entertaining and thrilling stories. I encourage you to go visit her blog when you're in the mood to escape into fiction.

Now back to my aviation story and my appreciation for the tangled, bundle of information that goes into preparing for a flight. By the time I started flying I had already learned to juggle news and financial information. Already was educated in proper research. All this led me to years of employment at my local library. There was never enough room for my aviation charts, books, flight plan forms, and I am supposed to do all of this on a kneeboard in the skies of metro NYC? Well, guess there is a need for that power of love that defies all logic. BTW the Internet was very young at the turn of the millennia. You should read the stories before all those flight instruments became common in cockpits! Anyway, one day sticks out where I was taking lessons. They had just finished renovating a new office when I walked in on the administrator. An enormousness desk was added to a mid-sized room. Not sure how it got in there. A Marine aviator was on staff, so maybe he knew the ship in the bottle trick. Or maybe, the walls were built around the desk. In either case.. I laughingly commented at how the ginormous desk space was being overrun by flight papers, and said to her, "You need a board room."

So think about that next time you're considering complaining to the pilot about a cramped passenger seat. Don't worry, we love to fly too much to let it get to us. :sunglasses:

Today, there is all but limitless access to information. Got to wonder why our phones are so small. Yes, they are portable, but how can we not be limited in our perspective. Take a gander at the multi-screens of financial channels. Or during the recaps when several charts are placed together. Can you gauge the reaction of your audience from merely one member of the crowd? How can we expect to grasp what truly happened from one news headline? One of the secrets I picked up back in the 80's was to lay the Wall Street Journal on top of the New York Times and read the front page sub headers together. Not all were about the same stories. And over time, it began to reveal the intensity of a world's daily events.
