Dregon ~ The Beast

As some of you guys know our son Dregon was diagnosed with autism last year and @imaginedragon and I shared his story on steemit as a lot of the parents there also have autistic children. Dre has been seeing his doctor and doing everything they prescribe for making him as self sufficient as possible as he grows up.

Not too long after we got his diagnosis we switched his speech doctor as his old one fell ill again with cancer. The new doctor started working with Dre and has made incredible leaps with him the past 6 months. He has improved so much, in fact, they are now doing other tests as a few of the doctors think he has a rare seizure disorder and is not autistic at all. He is traveling tomorrow to do an overnight brain study at John Hopkins.

We just celebrated his 5th birthday Monday. The last time we had shared Dre's story he would only say a few random words which were all different or just repeated. On his birthday he sang Happy Birthday along with the rest of us. He opened his presents for the first time by himself and was actually excited by what the gifts were. All other gifts prior to this party he would just look at and blink unaffected by it all. He then proceeded to tell me three times in a row, each louder than the last to hurry up and get the box off of his new toys.

Those 30 minutes as we were doing his party and gifts it would have been impossible for anyone to even remotely fathom he was a kid diagnosed with autism. It was an event that made both his mother and me cry. Making the decision to take Dre for the overnight neurological exam was a very hard decision for us to make. He is, after all, a mix of Sophia and I both and he is still a small growing boy.

The main issue we are concerned with is that they will more than likely have to put him to sleep with the help of an anesthesiologist for the eight hour test. Reacting as I do to being put to sleep there is no issue as I go under and come right out without any issues at all. Sophia becomes a full blown physically and mentally handicapped wreck for hours after being woke back up. I am trying my best to not freak out for his sake as he picks up on that instantly and I also do not want Sophia to cancel the test thinking that if I am worried it is a sign that something bad is going to happen to our little boy.

So that is where my head is at tonight as I am sharing pictures of Dregon's birthday with all of you. Have any of you ever had to have a just turned 5 year old to sleep by using an anesthesiologist to do it? As I share these photo's I hope some of you remember when I took Dregon to the party with the other autistic kids and out of all the toys he picked the white unicorn that fired nerf balls.

My wife took him to the party store to pick out his decorations as we have tried many times before and he would normally just stare at the stuff unmotivated to pick any of them. Not this year, my boy went directly to the decorations he wanted and put enough for 7 parties into the basket.

That little boy, my son, who has been getting my thirteenth hour ended up having a My Little Pony themed 5th birthday party. I really love this fucking kid and love that he picked out exactly what he wanted and was also excited about it.

Of course, we were so surprised and happy he picked his theme we went ahead and dropped $70 on the full set of my little pony toys, socks and pajamas. It was the horse toys he kept telling me to get the box open.
