Scorpio Astrology - Scorpio In Greek Mythology

Scorpio is Latin for "scorpion", which is Scorpio zodiac sign symbol. The myth associated with Scorpio Constellation refer to the Greek giant Orion and his battle with a deadly poisonous scorpion.

Orion was the most handsome man in the world and a big hunter. The legend says that he had such an enormous stature that he could walk on the bottom of the sea without getting his head wet.

According to the myth, Orion had an excessive pride and he liked to brag about his affairs, as all Goddesses in Mount Olymp were crazy about him.

One tale involves The Goddess of Dawn, Eos, who was a collector of young and handsome men and who spent one night with him. Orion later bragged about his conquest and also about his hunting skills, saying that he would kill all the beasts of the Earth.

This bragging made Apollo, the God of Sun, and Hera, the Earth Goddess, very angry. They sent a giant scorpion to sting and kill Orion.

The hunter tried to escape the deadly scorpion by swimming out to sea.

Meanwhile, another Goddess, Artemis, who was in love with the handsome man, tried to help Orion by killing the scorpion.

She fired her arrow to a black head she saw in the water, thinking that it was the scorpion. Tragically, the target proved to be Orion, and he died instantly.

Later, the grief-stricken Artemis placed Orion as a constellation among the stars, where he is eternally tracked by the giant scorpion.

A variation of this tale states that the battle between Orion and the scorpion was so lively that caught the attention of Zeus, who later raised the scorpion to heaven. Afterward, at the request of Artemis, he did the same for Orion, to serve as a reminder for mortals to curb their excessive pride.

Although Orion and the monstrous scorpion appear together in this myth, the Orion Constellation is almost opposite to the Scorpio Constellation in the sky.

Ruled by Pluto, the God of the Underworld, Scorpio is passionate and feel things very deeply. Extremely loyal and capable of devotion and self sacrifice for those they love, they feel very strongly about anything they do. They have an outer shell which protects a soft vulnerable inside.
