In Focus Artist Of The Week With ~ Julia Williams
This special edition of our In Focus Artist Of The Week features @juliawilliams, an artist from our Indian community. We are very pleased to present her interview in both English and Hindi. The Artist Project is committed to elevating artists from all cultures. Many thanks to @imransoudagar for his wonderful translation work and to @anyaehrim for her superlative formatting.
When did you start creating art and what is your earliest memory of that?
My first memory of creating art comes from my school days. I was in 5th grade and one of my classmates made a drawing of a beautiful rose and a parrot in just a few minutes. This single moment inspired me to become an artist and ever since then I have been trying to improve my skills and my techniques.
And for the past two years, I have been seriously trying to continue my hobby and passion for drawing something interesting and beautiful.
I think this would be an appropriate moment to share a secret with everyone. For the past two years, I have been designing and creating my own dresses. I simply draw whatever comes to my mind and then I try to incorporate it into my dresses. In a sense, I am exhibiting my art each time I wear my dresses.

Is there an element of art you enjoy working with most? Why?
I don't think that there is any single element that I enjoy about art, I love the process of creating art on a canvas with just a pencil.
Drawing fantasy figures, fairies and characters from the Indian Mythology interest me more. With these mythical creatures, I get to apply all the aspects of art especially the use of watercolor and different shades.
As an artist, I enjoy when someone appreciates my work and gives me a compliment. It always keeps me motivated and gives me a reason to keep painting.

What is your most important artist tool?
My pencils, they are a very special tool for me and I can’t imagine making anything without them. I mostly love to make pencil sketches, and watercolor paintings so both of these art forms start with pencil sketching.

Is there something you can’t live without in your studio?
My canvas sheets and pencils, both are very special and important parts of my work and without these I am helpless. I think these are the most important tools of my art studio.

What inspires you?
Nature and natural phenomena always inspire me, River banks, village scenes, rain, lush green trees, and majestic mountains are something that inspires me.

Who inspires you?
Raghao is a wonderful artist and he is from my own city. He has always inspired me to practice and do better. I think my brother Udai and Raghao both are always ready to motive me to do better than what I could do earlier. Raghao always tells me to make something that is better than my last one and this has dramatically helped me improve my art.

Why do you create art?
Art is the most beautiful and important part of my life and it is an abundant source of happiness. Whenever I have some free time I love to utilize it to practice and improve the quality of my art and make something that is very special and beautiful.
So, art is a beautiful part of my daily life, as important as many of our daily routines are important to us.

Explain what you do in about 100 words.
I want to be an Air hostess and now that I am getting trained to be one, it is a dream come true. Ever since I was a child I always wanted to fly in the sky and soon I will be flying around the world.
I also want to start my own boutique where I will make beautiful fairy dresses and sell them. I love designing my own dresses and adorn them according to my wish. I love to make portraits and landscapes so maybe one day I will have my own art exhibition someday.

Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?
Rivers and its banks are very magical, and they always attract me. The rivers are so mesmerizing that I often sit on the bank of River Ganges, its calmness, the cool gust of wind, and the unstoppable flow always pour my heart with emotions, awe and good positive feelings and I end up painting them on my canvas.

Is the artistic life lonely? If yes, what do you do to counteract it? If no, why do you think that is?
I don’t think artistic life is lonely. I do what I am passionate about and it always helps me meet new people, gets appreciated and draw portraits, create designer dresses for them.

Name three artists you’d like to be compared to.
I think it is not right to compare myself with anyone because everyone’s art is beautiful and has meaning to it. So I do not believe in comparison.
As of now, I don’t think I am capable to stand among any artist in comparison but definitely, I wish to be in line with Raghao Sir, BeHereNow Sir, and sweet Anya Ehrim and wish one day they will tell me that yes Julia you can stand with us.

Professionally, what are your goals?
I want to be a renowned artist, an Airhostess and well-established fashion designer as art and fashion designing are my hobbies so these both are amazing and need special attention to do better.
Getting a job as an air hostess is my dream and I am working hard to achieve my goal.

If you could only meet one artist from any time, who would it be?
I am a big fan of renowned Indian artist Pradip Sengupta, he is among the top artists of India. His painting has both modern and mythical elements with vibrant color schemes that express his emotions about the world.

What is your experience so far with trying to bring your art to the world?
The day when I started my journey on Steemit and started sharing my art with the world, I received an overwhelming and surprisingly very positive response from all over the world. I also learned a lot from other artists during this beautiful journey. And in my opinion, this is the reason why I never want to slow down my pace of producing good art.
The most awesome turning point came in my life when my brother Oodeyaa introduced me to Whaleshares. I feel more energetic, more enthusiastic and more responsible now. The most important part of this platform is that it brings so much love, care, and rewards for me.
I have been attending Monday Madness show where I get to interact with artists, writers, poets and they are pioneers of their fields. This show inspires me to do my best and share it with the best and it is an awesome experience for me.
अपनी कला को दुनिया में लाने की कोशिश के साथ अब तक आपका अनुभव क्या है?

How do you organize, plan, and prioritize your work?
I spend minimum 2 hours a day on my hobbies and art is an important aspect of my daily routine so I make sure never to miss a day. And it is bringing me a lot of recognition, lovely wishes, knowledge, and friends that I never feel like quitting.

Which current art world trends are you following?
Japanese art form Manga has caught my eye and it is used to make comic characters that have superheroes with supernatural powers. I am trying to get ideas and will probably come out with something interesting in the coming days.

Which styles of art are you most attracted to?
For me fantasy figures, mythological characters from Indian and other mythologies always attract. Natural beauty is my weakness, and when I see something naturally beautiful I can’t stop myself from drawing on my canvas.

What cultural importance do you think art has?
Living all my life in India has had a positive impact on my art. India has a rich art culture, with beautiful monuments such as the Taj Mahal which is one of the worlds 7 wonder. Jaipur, the pink city, a whole city painted in pink from houses to shops to temples and everything.
India has colorful religious festivals such as Holi which is all about playing with colors and spreading happiness.
The beautiful natural sceneries including the Mount Everest and the Jungles that inspired Rudyard Kipling to write the bestselling novel of all times “The Jungle Book” which inspired several movies such as the upcoming live-action thriller “Mowgli”.
This is what inspires me, this is the fuel that runs in my blood, the Indian culture is my inspiration, and everything you can imagine is my art.

भारत में मेरे पूरे जीवन में रहने से मेरी कला पर सकारात्मक प्रभाव पड़ा है। भारत में एक समृद्ध कला संस्कृति है, जिसमें ताजमहल जैसे खूबसूरत स्मारक हैं जो दुनिया के 7 आश्चर्यों में से एक है। जयपुर, गुलाबी शहर, पूरे शहर में घरों से लेकर दुकानों तक मंदिरों और सब कुछ गुलाबी रंग में चित्रित किया गया।
भारत में होली जैसे रंगीन धार्मिक त्यौहार हैं जो रंगों के साथ खेलने और खुशी फैलाने के बारे में हैं।

What do you think what are the qualities that define an artist?
The best quality for any artist is their ability to express their views, their grace, and their creativity. The best quality that I appreciate is the ability to express our feelings about current scenarios of the world.
An artist is a representative of his own beliefs and customs. An artist’s best quality should be his ability to interact with his audience through his art.
आपको क्या लगता है कि कलाकार को परिभाषित करने वाले गुण क्या हैं?

What does the Artist Project mean to you, and what are your hopes for it?
For me, the Artist project is an awesome opportunity which is the first real-world stone to my dream castle that will bring me fame, confidence, love and most importantly the fan following. It is a project by artists for artists.
So, friends, I have so many dreams, beliefs, and milestones which I will achieve with the help of this wonderful platform. The Artist Project is a confidence booster, supports us like a brother/friend and gives us recognition for contributing to this awesome community. A huge thank you from my heart to Snekky and Bug.
