Artistic Freedom ~ Living Off Your Art

Making a full time living off of art is not for everyone. I do not pretend that that is everyone’s goal. I accept wholeheartedly that many people do not wish to focus on making a paid career from their artistic endeavours.

There are many realities that surround this subject. Everything from artistic ability to market demand and everything in between. The particular point that one finds themselves at on this life journey really affects someone’s ability to function fully and be successful financially in an unconventional vocation.

Very few people have the luxury of a huge leg up in any industry, whether it be music, film, writing, painting or anything else. Who you know, or who your relatives are matter little if the raw talent is not present. Timing and luck can play a part, but they are still not the most important pieces of this puzzle in my opinion.

It has been said that we make our own luck.

It has also been said that the harder we work, the luckier we get.

These adages or cliches are true in my experience.

All of that said, what are the most important things needed to be financially successful as an artist of any kind.

Here are a few of my thoughts on some of the things needed for success:

  • Reliability

  • Joy

  • Growth

  • Consistency

  • Dedication

  • Personal progress

  • Personal investment in oneself

  • Tenacity

  • A willingness to both listen and to speak as necessary

  • An understanding of basic human psychology

  • Not everyone will understand you, be at peace with that

  • Not everyone will build you up, some will try to tear you down

  • Accept advice from reputable people

  • Listen to everyone and consider all opinions but give weight to those who are respected in your area of art and give very little weight to the opinions of people whose main business is to simply have opinions.

  • Focus on positive influences in your life.

There are many, many more aspects to being successful in your area of expertise. These thoughts only scratch the surface.

As someone who makes a living full time from music, I am happy to try to answer any questions you may have about how I made that possible. There were many steps involved and many puzzle pieces put in place that made the success I have possible.

All the best this year,
Bug
