Wire Art - Freya, the Goddess of Love

Freya is one of the most important goddesses in Norse mythology. She’s a member of the Vanir tribe of deities. Her father is Njord, her brother is Freyr. Her husband, God Odin, is frequently absent. She cries tears of red gold for him, and searches for him, riding her chariot pulled by two giant kittens, Bygul and Trigul. The cats were a gift from Thor, the powerful God of Thunder.

Below is a photographic reproduction of "Freyja Seeking her Husband" by Nils Blommer (1816 -1853).

There are so many legends around Freya. She is famous for her fondness of love, fertility, beauty, and fine material possessions. She is an expert in controlling and manipulating the desires, health, and prosperity of others, so she is one of the most powerful goddesses. Freya, the Goddess of love and beauty is a source of inspiration for artists all over the world.

This is my interpretation of Freya. A beautiful face, adorned with natural rose quartz nuggets, as Rose quartz or Pink quartz is the stone of love.

... and here is my starting point... rose quartz nuggets.... many of them :)

I bought a Styrofoam head from the crafts store and painted it (many layers) until I achieved the silvery look that I desired. Then I started to create the hair... long dread locks of wire, wrapped in rose quartz crystals. It took me a while, because I never plan anything and I encountered lots of problems... like the weight of the stones... the whole hair became very heavy...

... here is a picture of me being silly with some of the rose quartz dreads....

Finally I finished the hair locks, and started to make the face details: eyes, lashes, rhinestones. When face was finished, I had to come up with a frame to get the whole head steady. I shaped the wires and the locks to get more stability. I constructed a wire base and put everything together.

Final step, fix the tiara and a few more details.

Here are the steps in images.

I hope you like my Freya. I made Thor, too! If you want to read about my Thor wire sculpture, here is the article:
