Monkeys - Information for learners

They jump and make funny noises and some of them look like little humans.  They even have tiny hand with which they can grab things and some have long tails with which they hold on to branches and swing from one to another.


What am I talking about??  Monkeys....

There are more than 260 species of monkeys. See if you can find some pictures of some different types of monkeys and decide which one is your favorite.

The scientist have divided the monkeys in two groups - they are called the 'old world monkeys' and they come from Asia and Africa and then you have the 'new world monkeys' which come from South America.

A lot of people call apes also monkeys, but the truth is they are not. You can read more here.

The easiest way to distinguish monkeys from the other anthropoids is to look for a tail. Most monkey species have tails, but no apes or hominids do. Monkeys are much more like other mammals than apes and humans are.

Depending on the species, some will live in trees and some on the ground and their diet will also differ from eating fruits and plants to insects and some lizards.

The smallest monkey we know of is the Marmoset and it only weighs 120 grams and the biggest monkey is the Mandrill that can weight up to 35 kg with huge teeth that can really hurt you.

Capuchin monkeys are seen as one of the most clever monkeys. They can use tools to help with tasks, like using a stick or stone to break a nut and they can even learn commands if kept as a pet.

A monkey with very long arms and legs is the spider monkey. These monkeys spend a lot of time hanging in the trees. Read more about these monkeys here.
