Do better, do more

Whenever I watch athletes strive and win, the excitement on their faces when they realise that they have overcome, when I hear the stories of their resilience, their dedication to their craft, the sacrifices they have had to make, the demons they had conquered to get to the top, I feel so much joy. It is as if I am one with them.

The reward for doing something well can never be belittled. To know that hard work, persistence, passion pays is the satisfaction I derive from watching athletes perform, artistes, actors, artists. When I read a biography or see a documentary covering a person's struggles and how he or she overcame, I get this flush, this surge of energy. To know that greatness comes from ordinary bodies, to connect to the battles that brought a legend to the point where he or she became more than ordinary, is important for me. It says to me, that greatness is possible for anyone.

Reading of writers who have dealt with depression, poverty, loneliness in their lives even before, during or after they had written spectacular pieces of writing and how they survived through it all, leaving behind a body of work that still haunts till today, I have been able to find the understanding, the connection, the acceptance and the hope that eludes me most nights.

These athletes celebrating on the track, on the green, the artiste singing her heart out, the writer alone, signing autographs on copies of his book, are parts of me. I dream of them, they are the reason why I try to be better. I want to know the feeling of triumph, the rush of victory.

As I watch the world with the eyes of worry, in these strange and difficult times, I like to believe that we are not giving up but fighting hard so we can taste too that sweet victory. Good night.
