We Built This City - A Musical Foray

Bad song or good song? According to the Wikipedia article, this song was sometimes referred to as the worst song! Partly because of some of its nonsensical songs.

Personally, I tend to go by sound rather than lyrics. To me, this song is the 80s sound, reaching #1 in four different countries in 1985.

Original

We Built This City (on Rock and Roll) by Starship

Do songs always have to make sense? To me, this song is about powerful and intricate vocals which will be difficult for anyone to cover well.

We Built This City presented by 8 Bit Universe

It's really hard for an instrumental cover to get featured on this page - but I thought these guys did an absolutely excellent job in covering a complex song in 8 bit sound. If you love 80s music and 80s computer games, you'll probably love this cover too.

This one almost got the WTF selection because of the crazy intro, but the actual cover is excellent. My only gripe is the weird "ciday" pronunciation they have (the original is crisper than that.)

Besides my one enunciation complaint, their presentation is excellent - great vocals, instrumentals and stage presence that really does justice to the original.

If you want a fun version, definitely have a listen to this one.

WTF selection of the day

We Built This City - Metal Cover presented by Angelo Bissanti

Okay, I had to really work to choose something to fit my WTF category - I chose this one because of the general departure from the standard style.

I'm not a huge metal fan, but these guys have done an excellent job, even getting the guitar work spot-on. They are worth a listen, even if you're not into this style of music.

Parodies

It was almost impossible to find a good parody for this song. Most were very poor vocally. But absolute gem.

We Built This City on Sausage Rolls by Ladbaby

I love the acting they bring into this whole thing at the beginning - making it look like the lovely lady is rather fed up with her lad's weirdness. Yet, she very quickly gets involved and despite her protests, she's an excellent singer herself.

They even bring in some charitable stuff about the level of poverty in the UK (the numbers are shocking.)

Well lyricized, well performed, a true family affair - absolutely worth a listen. (I'm going to have to listen to some of their other work as well.)

Today's Finale!!!

We Built This City presented by Ninja Sex Party

Okay, I was worried about this one - the band name was enough to make me send my daughter out of the room while I chedked it out. But I wouldn't have needed to. This is an excellent band who do dress up a little (one guy is a ninja) - but they do a spectacular job of covering this spectacular song. (Their sound is actually cleaner than the original, I think.)
Have a listen, they are safe for work.

That's it for today! I hope you had as much fun as I did!

As usual, I'm simply sharing YouTube videos on a theme, all rights remain with the original.
