Achieving flow.

It’s evening time and I’m outside in my garden, it’s a acequia night tonight, the traditional irrigation system in Spain. It’s water from the mountains, that is directed to all the landowners, to water their crops and their land. I have quite a few veg gardens now, so I have had to dig out a few channels so that they all get a good soaking. Once that happens, I redirect to other parts of the land so that the olive trees and fruit trees get water as well.

We get acequia once a week, so it’s really important to flood the land as much as we can, so that the Earth can soak it up.

Usually at this time of the year we don’t get any acequia as the water is dried up, or piped off by landowners higher up the mountain. But because we had rain in May, it is still running and makes me so happy to see this water flowing onto the land knowing that it’s going to nourish the trees and my vegetables. vegetables.

I am sitting here watching the water flow through the channels and it makes me think of the importance of flow in my life, the importance of movement. Dancing, is definitely one of my favorite ways to move, one of the things in my life that has helped me achieve flow. But there are so many other things.
When we talk about flow, we tend to associate it with physical movement, but it’s not just our bodies that need to flow, it is our whole being, our mental and spiritual sides that need to flow also.

We’ve all experienced what it’s like when we get stuck inside our own heads, when we keep going over and over the same thing and get nowhere. It can be so hard to break those patterns. to break that cycle. We so easily can get caught up in negative thinking, about ourselves and about how we think other people perceive us. And this is so detrimental to our health ,becoming stuck in our own thoughts and our own assumptions.

Struggling to break away from our own narrative, our own stories.

The same can be said about our belief systems. We can become so static, refusing to see anything else. We are witnessing right now, how some beliefs which people hold onto are so toxic and so very destructive. Being stuck in our beliefs that have been handed down to us through the generations, especially beliefs about other people, about other races, about religion, about the different sexes and sexually orientations. So many people carry the same prejudices on from their families.
Holding on to those destructive narratives, not willing to challenge them, not willing to expand their minds. Instead stuck in their ways, ways that have been handed down to them.

This is so, so damaging, there is no flow, just stubbornly holding onto what they’ve been told by their families, by their parents by their grandparents, carrying those prejudice with them and then passing it on to their children. They are so ingrained, so stuck in this narrow way of thinking, not moving forward, not embracing the diversity that we have in this world and seeing it for what it really is, seeing the beauty in at all.

Allowing the diversity of life to flow into our lives, is so empowering for us all and for our communities.

And then we have Creative flow. When we are connected with our true self, then our creative force, can flow through us. We are all creative in so many different ways and when we tap into our creative self, we tap into a well of healing.

When we take the time to express ourselves through art, music, food, sport, dance or whatever we are passionate about, we are also creating an outlet, a channel in which we can release any pended up energy that we so often hold onto. All of these activities connect us to and our essential for our physical, spiritual and mental well being.

We are not meant to be stagnant, with our thoughts, with our emotions, with our bodies or with our development. Life is all about flow, finding that flow and changing with it, adapting with it. When we achieve this, then we empower ourselves, as we open up to so many potentials that come our way.

We grow as we flow!
