Do you believe in decentralized video platforms?

Greetings, whales!

How about discussing a decentralized video and streaming platforms?

A while ago, I had registered for a LBRY account. I think it was 2017 or somewhere around that. I touched a platform for a bit, even uploaded one file - presentation - to it, and then forgot about it for some time.

But now, I decided to re-look at what the decentralized video platforms & streaming can suggest to users around the world.

LBRY

Since 2017, library developed and improved a lot! It still has similar, easy, and non-cluttered interface with a nice dark theme. Everything is just in place and mostly the way it should be.

What's good about library?

  • Well, it's a decentralized video & file hosting that just works out of the box. Works pretty well!
  • It rewards both users and content creators
  • It has a lot of different monetization options, and even more - to follow
  • It has really nice, clear interface with dark theme support
  • Community grows (but quite slowly), more to come
  • Developers and support are hard-working even the project is already a 4-year-old-one

Downsides, for me, at this moment, are:

  • Lack of subtitle support. This is one of the WIP features, I think.
  • High-resolution videos are un-recommended. 720p is the default recommended setting. I'm okay without 4K or 8K support, but I would definetly prefer FullHD 1920x1080 videos as it's most widely used nowadays and allows for decent quality and screen sizes.
  • Application. I just don't like it. There are several reasons for that: 1) It's just an electron-wrapped LBRY website, which is just eating your memory and system space. 2) It lacks the PiP (Picture-in-Picture) feature that major browsers support now and this feature is so great! 3) It downloads the videos that you watch to your PC. While this is decentralized project and I do understand that this is intended approach, but I would prefer more fine-control on that. Like, I have a laptop of 256 gb NVME, and usually about 254 gb of which is occupied by other data. So I want to control the space that's allowed for LBRY, but I hadn't find this setting.
  • User-base is incomparably smaller than YT and even smaller video hostings, even LBRY being better in most parts. But you still get some attention

Other than this points, I generally like LBRY and I will continue to post inside the system. Currently it's my main blockchain video hosting. And the best part that it's not only for videos! You can post text, documents, presentation, images, whatever you like.

Video streaming

There's two major competitors as I can see them now - it's Dtube and Dlive.

Check out my stream on DLive (keygen radio music stream):

Check out my video on DTube (in Russian):

I will not describe positive and negative sides of DLive & DTube here as this post will become huge. If you're my reader and interested in me, describing the platforms, please leave the comment and I will write posts about these!

For now, thanks for reading, and see you in the next one :)
