Showing off my peppers

Who knew peppers continued growing so late in the season?

I previously had some confusion about how red, yellow and green peppers were created. Well now I know! They just turn that colour over time ;) First yellow, then red. So really, the colour of the pepper simply tells us how long they have been on the plant.

What you can see beneath are two plants in our courtyard which were grown from the seeds of a store bough pepper. Interesting to note that our courtyard does not get any direct sunlight at this time of year (till the leaves fall off the oak trees!) yet the peppers are still ripening perfectly.

I planted them back in January so it is a long old season for them. Despite growing out of a converted pallet they seem extremely happy.

We have noticed they keep best when we simply leave them on the plant but now that we are getting frosts at night I don't imagine they have too much longer before they will start turning bad.

After harvesting the ones on the allotment we trimmed them back and dug them up, putting them in pots, seen below.

They should survive the winter in our courtyard (I think!) and we will re-plant them in spring, giving us a much longer pepper season next year.

The Padrón peppers are hot and can be used to spice up dishes this winter, so we dried them and hung them up here.

This is Sabrina's department but personally I'm voting for some home made Tabasco sauce! An old favourite of my father, who lives on in many ways through Esteban.

Now to find out if he still likes hot stuff!
