Family is important. I don’t think we can do away without one. I understand that we all have different ideas of what a family means, based on our background and upbringing, but there is no denying the fact that family is important to our lives. Family should be about love, support and creating memorable experiences even unpleasant ones too. For some, it's heaven on earth and for some, it's a lion's den where fine cubs are raised.

Family is a great support system and that's how it should be. When the chips are down, when every other person out there fails to believe in your dreams, they are the ones you can easily run to and would lend their support. There are times when outsiders wouldn’t want to tell us the truth, for the fear of losing us or our friendship, they are the ones we can trust to break the truth to us gently and loudly at the same time. They would let us know how things are and be honest with us anytime we erred. Family is sweet.

A family loves you regardless. We have a different personalities in the house and we don’t always have the same insight into things. Sometimes, we see a ‘black sheep’ in a home and you still see how they rally around just to make that person better. They wouldn’t wish death on such a person, no matter how bad such a person is. There is always a window of hope opened for such a person.

You can be very sure your love is never lost in a family. They know you so well and still love you regardless. The family would readily go through thick and thin for you just to support your dreams. Have you ever seen how love and arguments ensued when there are family gatherings? There is no pretence at all where family is concerned. I can’t count the number of times I have argued, screamed and shouted at my brothers, particularly the firstborn and you need to see how we laugh and relate right now. Some things happen at a particular age and there are some things you drop off when maturity sets in. Right now, I don’t think I can ever scream, shout or argue unreasonably with him or the secondborn anymore. You outgrow some things without necessarily forcing it because you understand things better and know it's all love.

Arguments and laughter go hand in hand where family is concerned. You only feel hurt where love is involved. Would you ever be bothered about feeling hurt over what someone you don’t know did? When you are indifferent about someone, it is difficult for such a person to hurt you. Where there is love, then there are bound to be arguments.

I am speaking based on my idea of family and I know we have different views where this is concerned. The good part of a family outweighs the downsides and I would never trade family for anything. Family is also of the heart and some friends are closer just as a family because of the closeness built over the years in addition to the similarities they give with family.

I know a lot of people might not be around their families during this festive period but you can give a call, have meaningful chats, have laughter through video calls and send gifts across the distance, but never let us lose the real essence of what a family truly stand for. The family will always stick better to you. I know some friends stick better than some family members, and this is why I said we have different ideas of what a family means based on our exposure and experiences. Our upbringing plays a huge part in how we view what a family means.

How do you plan on spending your festive period? Are you going to spend it with family or friends? Create amazing memories this festive period that you can look back on in years to come and be excited that you made them.

Thank you for your time.
