Flight recorders, invented by Dr. David Warren in 1954 and commonly known as "black boxes", are mandatory on all major aircraft.

They are virtually indestructible devices that provide the flight, voice and cockpit sound data immediately prior to a plane crash.

Black boxes are crucial to post-crash aircraft investigations and increasing flight safety.

But why are these orange colored devices called "black boxes"?

The answer comes from the British in World War II.

The term "black box" was used for any of the secret British World War II radio, radar, and electronic navigational aids within Allied combat aircraft.

These devices were literally encased in non-reflective black boxes or housings, hence the name "black box".
