Do we have enough witnesses?
Witnesses, it is a subject that comes up pretty often. People are worried when they see the number of witnesses who, for one reason or another, disabled their server. It may look bad, but we are not doing so bad at all. In the top50 list of Witnesses we only have 12 disabled witnesses.
Yesterday I found out I had become a top20 witness on Smoke.io, which is great, but probably also not so great. In Smoke.io's top 50 list, 23 witnesses have disabled their server.
Smoke.io is a niche market, the platform has potential, just needs a push to grow. That is why I am supporting it by being a witness. As a non-smoker of whatever you can set on fire, I can only add off-topic content that is slightly related to weed. But Smoke.io is also about plants, how to grow them, how to keep them alive. It is fascinating to see what and how people do things.
If you have plans of becoming a witness, Smoke.io may be something for you to look at.
Back to how many witnesses you need. There isn't an exact number you need. The minimum is defined by how many witnesses it takes to reach consensus, for the maximum you could probably say, the sky is the limit. We are blessed with a good number of enthusiastic, supportive, great witnesses, but if you want to become a witness, do it, there is always room for more.
Being a witness is more than just running a server, although that is an important task. It is also about supporting the platform by good behavior, putting the platform and the members before anything else. While in beta, being a witness is more about duties than rights. Which, in my opinion, is not a bad thing.
Use your witness votes wisely
Jump over to the Block Producer / Witness page and cast your witness votes. Simply click on the (^) up arrow next to the witness names of your choice (consider voting for "krazywitness" and "ijmmaiwitness") and supply your private active key to lock in your vote. Refresh the page in case your vote doesn't seem to stick.
