Getting Things Sorted

This is the account for HH Recycling and will serve as a blog to keep track of our progress in getting a proper recycling program going in our small, remote, northern town. As of right now we have to have a company from thirteen hours away come up and drain the refrigerant from our appliances once a year. This leads to a huge pile of appliances just sitting at the dump. Over 200 of them. That's in addition to the mounds of other scrap that gets thrown out there.

An average load of scrap from the dump.

So now that we have the company incorporated and an appointment at the bank to get an account set up, I went ahead and took the course to become certified for removal of refrigerant from fridges, freezers, air conditioners, water coolers or dehumidifiers. I have passed the exam and now will wait for my certificate to come in so I can set up an account with a refrigerant wholesaler and begin drumming up business.

I will start with our dump and hopefully will be able to get all of the dumps in our regional district eventually. I am hoping to be able to offer better pricing by being local and not having the fuel and live out costs that someone coming from far away would have. I also will be able to remove the copper from the units to alleviate a lot of the costs. If I could get even a pound of #1 copper per unit, it would add an extra $500- $1000 at the end of the year. That may not seem like a lot but it would really add up if I got that from the other ten dumps in the area as well.
