Have fun with Singapore Informal English (Singlish)

fun2learnPosted for Everyone to comment on, 5 years ago3 min read

Singlish is a colloquial Singaporean English even though the education system is based on British Standard English in Singapore.

Singlish has a combination of English, Teochew, Malay, Tamil, Hokkien and Cantonese with some elements of American and Australian Slang as well.

In recent years, there are more people who start to take more serious interest in Singlish even though it was greatly discouraged in the beginning due to the concern that Singaporeans may not be able to communicate using the formal English language when they are overseas.

Oxford English Dictionary has included some Singlish into its printed and online versions these few years.

I have collated some fun videoclips for those who may want to have some fun listening to Singlish and learn some if anyone is interested to visit Singapore.

Below is a videoclip by Gwee Li Sui on Tedx with an argument why Singlish is a language for our future.

I hope you have enjoyed this unusual post that I did it out of sudden inspiration.

I must admit I do not understand all Singlish words but it is good to know them since my students are using them regularly during informal conversation.

Singlish does bring Singaporeans closer to one another and it creates an unknown bonding even when a foreigner tries to speak Singlish.

I am quite sure you would be able to see some benefits of using singlish after watching these videoclips as Singlish often helps to get things across faster with shortened sentences.
