Vandaag wil ik het hebben over BBS-en, zowat de voorloper van het internet en hoe je ze (nog steeds) kan bereiken.
Een BBS of Bulletin Board System is een computer (server) waar bepaalde software op draait die het mogelijk maakt om erop in te loggen via een terminal. Het is een systeem uit de jaren 80 waar je berichten kan op achterlaten, files kan up en downloaden, online spelletjes spelen en gebruik maken van fidonet, de voorloper van email.
Omdat er toen nog geen internet bestond kon je erop inloggen via een modem en een telefoonlijn. Mijn eerste modem had een snelheid van 1200 Baud. Dat was enorm traag in vergelijking met nu. 1200 Baud komt overeen met 0.00013Mb, dat is het verschil tussen een slak en een vliegtuig (jet).
Er bestaan nog BBS-en, maar die zijn gelukkig te bereiken via TELNET, een ander protocol dan HTTPS.
Telnet is een protocol dat het mogelijk maakt om twee computers met elkaar te verbinden vanuit een terminal.
Het is nog steeds meegeleverd met jouw windowspakket maar wordt niet standaard geïnstalleerd dus moet je het nog activeren.

Tenet installeren (windows): Configuratiescherm>>Programma's>>Windowsonderdelen in- of uitschakelen>>vink "Tenet client" aan en klik op OK. zie video
Vanaf nu kan je in je browser de telnet client activeren door het adres te beginnen met "telnet://"

Voila, je hebt je eerste telnetverbinding met een BBS met succes gemaakt.
Je kan natuurlijk ook een echt telnet programma downloaden dat speciaal gemaakt is om te verbinden met BBS-en zoals SyncTERM die zorgt voor heel wat gebruikersgemak zoals muisbediening en opslag van adressen en automatisch inloggen, de keuze is aan u.
Verwacht op een BBS geen flitsende beelden, hoge resolutie achtergronden en video's. Het is en blijft een oude technologie die gebruik maakt van tekst en ANSI characters
Toch kon/kan men met deze beperkte middelen heuse kunstwerken maken.
Een leuk introscherm is die van Monero place (telnet://monero.place:8888) zie hieronder, je kan inloggen als gast met als login "anon" en met het paswoord "guestpass123"

Today I want to talk about BBSes, the forerunner of the internet and how you can (still) reach them.
A BBS or Bulletin Board System is a computer (server) on which certain software runs that makes it possible to log in to it via a terminal. It is a system from the 1980s where you can leave messages, upload and download files, play online games and use fidonet, the predecessor of email.
Because there was no internet at that time, you could log in via a modem and a telephone line. My first modem had a speed of 1200 baud. That was very slow compared to now. 1200 Baud corresponds to 0.00013Mb, which is the difference between a snail and an airplane (jet).
There are still BBSes, but fortunately they can be reached via TELNET, a different protocol than HTTPS.
Telnet is a protocol that allows two computers to connect from a terminal.
It is still included with your windows package but is not installed by default so you still have to activate it.

Install Tenet (windows): Control Panel>>Programs>>Enable or disable Windows features>>check "Tenet client" and click OK. (see video)
From now on you can activate the telnet client in your browser by starting the address with "telnet://"

That's it, you have successfully made your first telnet connection to a BBS.
Of course you can also download a real telnet program specially made to connect to BBSes such as SyncTERM which provides a lot of user convenience such as mouse control and storage of addresses and automatic log in, the choice is yours.
Don't expect flashy images, high resolution backgrounds and videos on a BBS. It is and remains an old technology that uses text and ANSI characters
Yet, with these limited resources, real artworks could be made.
