Mobility Photochallenge
Going old school
The Saturday theme from @photochallenge is all about "mobility." This series of shots is from when I was hired to take some photos for this guy that rides this old bike in parades. He needed some updated pictures to send in to the different parades in the area so they would pay him to ride the bike in the parade. It seems like a weird gig to ride this big old bike in a parade for a job, but it works for him.
The bike is called a Penny-Farthing or "Ordinary" Bike. It was the first bicycle and was popular in the 1870s until about the 1880s. In the 1880s, the modern design for a bicycle was made, where the tire wasn't as massive. The newer "modern" bikes were considered a lot safer because people weren't falling from such high heights and splitting their heads open.
During the shoot, I jumped on the bike and took it for a spin and it was pretty scary being up so high on it. The turning radius was huge and you had to open your knees out while turning so the tire didn't hit your legs. You also had to slow way down while turning so you didn't tip over. I could just imagine how much it would suck to be going full speed and then fly off the top of this thing.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out my photography. You are awesome.
