Strange Guns: Davis-Warner Infallible

The Infallible Pistol was a strange .32 ACP calibre handgun made by the Davis-Warner Arms Corp from 1914 to 1921.

It was made because the Warner Arms Co. could no longer import Schwarzlose Model 1908 pistols from Germany. The Infallible Pistol made in the United States come in three variations. It was obvious that the front sights and the grips were an effort to imitate the outline of the Schwarzlose Model 1908 pistol.

The Infallible Pistol was called the "Davis-Warner Infallible". And its known trademark was "Blocks the Sear", referring to the way the safety worked. Unlike the Schwarzlose Model 1908 pistol, the Infallible Pistol is kind of conventional. It uses a breechblock rather than a slide, though, since another gun inventor named John Moses Browning had patented the design of an auto pistol slide with integral breechblock.

The pistol has a discouraging drawback. At the back is a small lever, while the other is a push through pin. If the shooter disassembled the weapon and forgot the turn the lever the right way, or forgot to push the pin all the way in, the breechblock would be stopped only by a little and could come back flying in the shooter's face. The guns were really not "infallible" as it was claimed and the Davis-Warner Arms Corp soon went out of business. Only about 7600 were produced which made it a collector's item.
