On the Whaleshares blockchain, witnesses serve a role of validating signatures and timestamping transactions by including them in blocks. A block is any group of transactions (posts, votes, transfers, etc) which update the state of the database. Each time a witness produces a block, they are paid for their service. If a witness fails to produce a block, then they are not paid, and may even be voted out.

Witnesses are generally expected to manage a reliable block producing node, implement a failover system, maintain a public seed node, tune blockchain operating parameters, but since Whaleshares is a infant blockchain most of the above mentioned are not rarely implemented yet.

As a WLS user who wants to see this platform continue to grow and flourish, we all have 30 votes to cast for any WLS witness of our choice and I will say this is the most important 30 votes you will ever cast on this platform.

Lets call them Blockchain Guardians or a slight used term block producers.

Meet our Blockchain Guardians is a series put in place to know more about our very own witnesses, there roles and obligations. We need them as much as they needs us. Our witness are the leaders on the platform and thus it is our paramount importance that we due our due diligence before casting our votes.

Today I had the opportunity to interview a person that helped me out from the start of my WLS journey and I am very grateful for this person.

Join me as I welcome @merej99 she Co-runs the witness @lexiwitness [email protected] to, Meet Our Blockchain Guardians.

Hi Chrono! I'd be happy to answer some questions.

What brought you to WLS?

  • Truthfully? A nudge from @powerpics got me to join. I’d seen the Whaleshares posts on Steemit and it didn’t seem like anything I was going to seriously adopt because I’m wasn’t familiar with the BitShares community at large, and not a big fan of the Open Ledger DEX. Ultimately there were enough people that I’ve been interacting with over the last two years whom I follow and respect because of their contributions to the community. So when @powerpics said, “Mere, we need strong community people over here,” it was hard to resist the call.

What got you interested in becoming a Witness?

  • I’m a content creator and I’ve been nurturing online communities since the 90s. My platform has always been "community first". This felt like the right time to jump in and bring whatever skill and experience I have from decades of blogging, content creation, and customer service.

  • I've always wanted to be a Witness on the Steemit blockchain but didn't have the technical chops or the bravery to take on the dev side of things. Think about it: two years ago the idea of a blockchain-based content creation site with unlimited earning potential was and is cutting edge stuff.

  • I still wonder if I’m doing justice by joining in on the technical side of things. I probably wouldn’t have done it without my friend and Witness partner @lexikon082, but we have a vision of what an online community should look like and we will lend our voice and resources to make a strong platform.

What have you developed for wls?

  • At the moment @lexikon082 and I are getting the community warmed up with with our presence by leaving lots of comments and sharing posts. We’ve been actively promoting the #funny and #nsfw using memes as a tool to generate interest outside of the WLS community, namely through our social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

  • @lexikon082 has decided to keep “Predict the Score” on the lexiwitness platform to improve interaction behind this account. Our goal is to power up the witness account to justify creating our own Whale Token.

  • I’ve launched #acanoobly, a Whaleshares exclusive tag to educate newcomers.

  • We are nearly ready to launch a Community Engagement Challenge; a 10-day posting, curating, commenting bootcamp for newb and veteran content creators. It’s intense but it proves my point: Content, Curation, Comments. You need those 3 C’s to build a tribe.

Being a witness takes a lot of time and energy, how do you keep a balance between this and other commitments?

  • I did not make this decision lightly because I already have work/life/fun balance issues. When work is fun, what other life do I need? Still, it helps that I work from home so my commute is bedroom to kitchen -because coffee is important- to desk. It also helps that my kids are grown.

  • A freelancer by trade, I write, help maintain WP sites, and manage social media sites for a few clients. Adding lexiwitness to the pot wasn’t a big deal in that respect. Essentially, I am working well within my wheelhouse. The only real time-suck is Discord. Truthfully, I love it but it’s hard to get anything else done when I’m trying to catch up on a 24/7 stream of content but it seems to be a necessary “evil” in order to have a strong showing and get organically earned Witness votes.

Where do you see wls in 5 years?

  • In five years WLS is going to be what all other projects emulate! I expect to see several DApps using our chain, more mainstream adoption, and a thriving community who looks out for one another. Your development of WhaleD is one example of an individual’s impact on a platform. We already have an amazing think tank and we’re barely 2 months old.

When you are not in front of your computer helping the WLS community, what other hobbies do you have?

  • I love to write fiction, draw, and sing. I’m also taking introductory Python classes and scrolling through GitHub to learn. When I’m away from my computer I watch The Voice and I love medical dramas.

If you could only vote for one witness (not yourself) who would it be and why?

  • Actually, if there was one person who isn’t yet on Whaleshares but I would love to recruit him as a witness, it would be timcliff from Steemit. I’m still learning what makes our current witnesses tick so I vote as I get to know them and what they stand for.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?

  • Teleportation. I would be popping in all over the world to snap photos and write stories and do research, then pop myself back home to write about it on Whaleshares, of course!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer a couple questions for our community. 🤝🏻

As WhaleShares users we need to do everything in our power to choose Block Guardians that will represent the community well. Before voting make sure you do some research on the people you are voting for and be informed. Head over to https://whaleshares.io/~witnesses and click on some of the witnesses names, get to know them a bit better and do your part to make sure this community thrives.

Now that you have read something about @merej99 - @lexiwitness, It will be good and kind of you to show them some love by going to the witness page, search the box and type @lexiwitness to cast your vote for them as your Block Producer.
