Social responsibility should be discharged at various levels:

  • Responsibility to owners of the firm.
  • Responsibility to consumers
  • Responsibility to employees
  • Responsibility to government
  • Responsibility to the immediate community where the business conducts its activities.

• Responsibility to owners.

A business is expected to make profits for its owners as a reward for investing their hard-earned money. The managers of a business must use its resources judiciously, be honest and transparent to owners and ensure the continued existence of the business.

• Responsibility to consumers.

Consumers do not only expect a regular supply of goods and services in desired quantity and quality but also reasonable prices, moderate prices, reliable packages, information, open lines of communication, nondeceptive advertising and desired distribution channels from business firms. In order to attract and retain customer's patronage and loyalty, a business organization must ensure the fulfillment of most of these responsibilities.

• Responsibility to employees.

It is not enough for a business to pay the agreed salaries and wages to workers. For a firm to be socially responsible it must pay workers well and pay them timely, provide them with good working tools and conducive work environment, train them, respect their persons, show concern for their wellness and health conditions, create an open door for their views or suggestion and if possible offer them counseling. In fact, a business should take care of the employee's general welfare to ensure commitment, loyalty, and progressive productivity.

• Responsibility to governments.

Such responsibility includes payment of taxes without fiddling with the books to reduce the amount of tax payable, contribution to national development through the time and energy of managers, charity donations in times of national disasters, obedience and respect for governmental laws and policies; partnering with government financially in ensuring a healthy and vigorous economy. Such acts would not only make a business to be a responsible corporate citizen but can create a good environment and government patronage for the business.

• Responsibility to the immediate community.

The immediate community where a business organization conducts its activities is usually the first victim of all the adverse effects of such activities. Therefore a business is required to conduct itself in a responsible manner by avoiding or reducing pollution, compensating the host community for degrading or depleting its resources through e.g. Afforestation; providing health care services such as hospitals, schools, free products occasionally, road construction or repairs, scholarships awards, endowments support and any other better-life enhancement contributions.
